ANY BUYING/SELLING IN THIS FORUM WILL RESULT IN AN INSTANT BAN!
Read the rules: http://www.cb7tuner.com/vbb/showthread.php?t=43956
Myself, and the other mods have been very nice and lenient with the rules. We have been deleting threads, and giving out warnings. Some members didn't get the clue and re-posted over and over... Now ANY member buying or selling in this section will be banned... No IF's AND's or BUT's.

Beginner Forum Rules - EVERYBODY read! (old and new members alike!)
Beginners start here. Once you have 30 worthwhile posts (off topic doesn't count) you may post outside of the Beginner forums. Any "whoring" (posting simply to raise your post count) will return your count to 0, or result in a ban.
These are the rules. Read them. Live by them.
1) Absolutely NO flaming! "Flaming" is an outright attack on a member. ALL questions are encouraged to be asked here, no matter how basic. Members with over 30 posts will be subject to a ONE WEEK ban if caught flaming in this forum (and yes, moderators can read deleted posts). Members with under 30 posts will be subject to a ONE DAY ban.
2) Use appropriate language. Racial or sexual slurs will not be tolerated. A ban will be issued at the discretion of the cb7tuner.com staff.
3) No items may be sold in the Beginner forums. Any "for sale" threads will be deleted.
4) Temporarily banned members will be PERMANTLY banned if they are found posting on another account.
The rules can and will be added to. Any updates will be marked in the title.
The rules for the overall forum can be found here:

Read them. You will be expected to follow them.

Don't angst too much about the cotter pin size on the castle nut, any cotter pin that will fit in there with a reasonably close fit will do the job. In most cases they won't take any stress anyways, they are only there in the odd event that the castle nut starts backing off, which it is unlikely to do if you torque it to the right spec.
Be sure to follow the instructions about tightening the castle nut: tighten to the specified (minimum) torque, then see if the cotter pin holes line up. If they don't, continue to turn the nut IN A TIGHTENING DIRECTION ONLY until the cotter pin holes line up.Last edited by batever; 08-24-2010, 11:20 AM.

well i dont have another car so i dont want to me walking to the store to get the right onesOriginally posted by dano28 View PostThe ones that worked for me were 3/32" x 1-1/2". I actually cut these down a bit with my Dremel.
It would be a crying shame to buy a $2 pack of cotter pins that were the wrong FRIGGEN size.

If u are in dire need of a cotter pin and don't have one u can use a paperclip or something of the sort. I had to use one at one time, I just put it in there and bent it around and cut the excess off. Like already said, the cotter pin doesn't take any stress really. Its just to prevent any unscrewing.

Keep in mind that if you have a torque wrench and torque that castle nut to the right initial torque, or even guesstimate with a normal wrench (not recommended!) it is unlikely to back off at all, never mind backing off during a short jaunt to the store for your backup cotter pin. Also, like stated previously, you can always just put a piece of galvanized wire or something in there as a backup until you get a real cotter pin.Originally posted by blazedealh91 View Postwell i dont have another car so i dont want to me walking to the store to get the right ones
Buying the cotter pin assortment at the hardware store is a good approach, though more expensive than just buying one cotter pin and since you have a couple of good size recommendations you could get buy on just buying one cotter pin.
I am still using the tin of assorted cotter pins my grandfather bought who-knows-when, probably like 1950. it has that 50s-style advertising writing on the outside of the tin. So far I have used a total of two cotter pins from it: one for the castle nut on the right knuckle, and one for the clutch pedal linkage to my clutch master cylinder. Looks like they are gonna last a while longer, perhaps to my kids or whoever takes an interest in my tools after I am gone.Last edited by batever; 08-24-2010, 09:02 PM.
