i recently noticed that an h22 has a stroke of 90.7mm, and the non vtec engines, such as the f22b dohc have a stoke of 95 mm. the h22 has higher torquw numbers however. does the longer stroke of the non vtec engines result in a more usable torque band? what is the explanation and advantage/disadvantage?

ANY BUYING/SELLING IN THIS FORUM WILL RESULT IN AN INSTANT BAN!
Read the rules: http://www.cb7tuner.com/vbb/showthread.php?t=43956
Myself, and the other mods have been very nice and lenient with the rules. We have been deleting threads, and giving out warnings. Some members didn't get the clue and re-posted over and over... Now ANY member buying or selling in this section will be banned... No IF's AND's or BUT's.

Beginner Forum Rules - EVERYBODY read! (old and new members alike!)
Beginners start here. Once you have 30 worthwhile posts (off topic doesn't count) you may post outside of the Beginner forums. Any "whoring" (posting simply to raise your post count) will return your count to 0, or result in a ban.
These are the rules. Read them. Live by them.
1) Absolutely NO flaming! "Flaming" is an outright attack on a member. ALL questions are encouraged to be asked here, no matter how basic. Members with over 30 posts will be subject to a ONE WEEK ban if caught flaming in this forum (and yes, moderators can read deleted posts). Members with under 30 posts will be subject to a ONE DAY ban.
2) Use appropriate language. Racial or sexual slurs will not be tolerated. A ban will be issued at the discretion of the cb7tuner.com staff.
3) No items may be sold in the Beginner forums. Any "for sale" threads will be deleted.
4) Temporarily banned members will be PERMANTLY banned if they are found posting on another account.
The rules can and will be added to. Any updates will be marked in the title.
The rules for the overall forum can be found here:

Ok I have a few questions for you.
You running a H22a,H22a1,H22a4 and if so what year.
H22a 50mm main bearing journels
H22a1 is also 50mm
H22a4 is 55mm untill 97+ it is 50mm
This will will take some work. You need a pro to plexi your bearing fitment. You need to decide what motor combo you want to run.
Your best bet is to just buy a nice piston and rod, have them installed and get a tune.
Best bet but your car.Best of luck.

stroke
Well first of all there are plenty of threads on the interwebs about stroking an h22. Honda even did it in an h23 vtec option not available in the united states.
I would highly reccomend you do some reading on rod to stroke ratio's. That reading alone may answer your question.
If you are looking for general reasons why the non vtec motors had longer strokes than the vtec motors, this is a design decision from honda to make the engines be safe to rev to higher rpm's on stock internals.
With work the longer stroke can be used and you can rev it just as high, but that would have cost more money, something honda didn't want to spend for the most part.
They also sold a destroked h22 in the form of the f20b, this motor was created so that honda could race it in the 2.0 liter and smaller engine classes. This motor uses the h22 type s head with a destroked crank. This improves the rod to stroke ratio which is good for race motors.
As for the torque band, all of the motors you are probably looking at have amazing torque curves. Most of these engines are at 70% of peak torque by 2500 rpms, and hold it until the camshaft stops producing power.
Stroking the h22 seems to add about 10 torque across the entire rpm range, so it is a very nice addition, but something that should be highly researched before doing so.
I opted to not do the stroker in my build to retain the better, still not good, but better rod to stroke ratio.
Do some research, there is lots of information on stroking motors and the h22 available.

I am not referring to stroking the engine. i am simply asking why the two engines (H22, F22B DOHC) have different strokes. I noticed that the f22a's are the same deal with the 95mm stroke. Does this increase in stroke result in more usable torque over the h22, or is there some sort of advantage for the non vtec's?

Long stroke = more torque (IMO a better street powerband)
Short stroke = revvability
Though there are many (most notably d112crzy) who have stroked H22s with stock parts, and continued to drive them like regular H22s w/o any probs.
I def always preferred the non VTEC performance to the H22's low cam performance. I think the stroke was the difference

alright thanks, thats what i was looking for. last week i swapped an f22b dohc into my 5th gen prelude for my turbo setup. I have been breaking in the clutch with the f22 NA, and i thought i was crazy for a minute because i swear it has more torque in the low end than my h22a4 did. once i saw it had a longer stroke it got me thinking. does anyone else have any input on this?
