A buddy of mine wants to do a simple motor replacement in his 91 LX , not trying to do the H22 swap . He wants to do a F22B1 VTEC or F22B DOHC , can't decide if he wants to go VTEC or DOHC . I also recommended that he looked into the H23A1 Non-VTEC . Any suggestions on what would be the best replacement motor ?

ANY BUYING/SELLING IN THIS FORUM WILL RESULT IN AN INSTANT BAN!
Read the rules: http://www.cb7tuner.com/vbb/showthread.php?t=43956
Myself, and the other mods have been very nice and lenient with the rules. We have been deleting threads, and giving out warnings. Some members didn't get the clue and re-posted over and over... Now ANY member buying or selling in this section will be banned... No IF's AND's or BUT's.

Beginner Forum Rules - EVERYBODY read! (old and new members alike!)
Beginners start here. Once you have 30 worthwhile posts (off topic doesn't count) you may post outside of the Beginner forums. Any "whoring" (posting simply to raise your post count) will return your count to 0, or result in a ban.
These are the rules. Read them. Live by them.
1) Absolutely NO flaming! "Flaming" is an outright attack on a member. ALL questions are encouraged to be asked here, no matter how basic. Members with over 30 posts will be subject to a ONE WEEK ban if caught flaming in this forum (and yes, moderators can read deleted posts). Members with under 30 posts will be subject to a ONE DAY ban.
2) Use appropriate language. Racial or sexual slurs will not be tolerated. A ban will be issued at the discretion of the cb7tuner.com staff.
3) No items may be sold in the Beginner forums. Any "for sale" threads will be deleted.
4) Temporarily banned members will be PERMANTLY banned if they are found posting on another account.
The rules can and will be added to. Any updates will be marked in the title.
The rules for the overall forum can be found here:
Read them. You will be expected to follow them.

I'm not sure what's wrong with it , not sure he knows either but it's been running rough for a while and getting worse . And he wants a little more power but no H22 , H23 VTEC , or F20B power . Something that isn't gonna cost that much . I recommended the F22A6 with some bolt ons but he wants DOHC or VTEC

The F22B1 is a downgrade from the F22A. Cramped ports and poor valve angles. If he just wants 150hp and good fuel economy, it's fine... but if he wants to modify it, there's no use swapping to that motor. VTEC only works on the intake valves anyway.
The F22B DOHC is very nice, but doesn't really have all that much more to offer over the F22A. For the price of the F22B DOHC swap, an F22A can easily be modified to make even more power. Again, if 160hp is good enough, then the bone-stock F22B DOHC fits the bill quite well (as does the H23A1.) Both the F22B DOHC and H23A1 have their drawbacks... mainly, the F22B DOHC was never sold here, so any specific parts are not easy to find (like the timing belt.) The H23A1 has FRM sleeves, which are fantastic, but can result in oil consumption as the motor wears out, and they're more difficult to resurface (many shops don't want to deal with FRM sleeves.)
Why doesn't he want an H22? Because "everyone else has one"?
That's about as smart as saying "I'll eat a lump of crap, because everyone else is eating cheeseburgers!"

He just wants to make it simple , quick , and cheap . He really does need to get rid of the F22 he has , not sure why he doesn't wanna go back with the F22 and get the A6 .
