ANY BUYING/SELLING IN THIS FORUM WILL RESULT IN AN INSTANT BAN!

Read the rules: http://www.cb7tuner.com/vbb/showthread.php?t=43956

Myself, and the other mods have been very nice and lenient with the rules. We have been deleting threads, and giving out warnings. Some members didn't get the clue and re-posted over and over... Now ANY member buying or selling in this section will be banned... No IF's AND's or BUT's.

Beginner Forum Rules - EVERYBODY read! (old and new members alike!)

Beginners start here. Once you have 30 worthwhile posts (off topic doesn't count) you may post outside of the Beginner forums. Any "whoring" (posting simply to raise your post count) will return your count to 0, or result in a ban.

These are the rules. Read them. Live by them.

1) Absolutely NO flaming! "Flaming" is an outright attack on a member. ALL questions are encouraged to be asked here, no matter how basic. Members with over 30 posts will be subject to a ONE WEEK ban if caught flaming in this forum (and yes, moderators can read deleted posts). Members with under 30 posts will be subject to a ONE DAY ban.

2) Use appropriate language. Racial or sexual slurs will not be tolerated. A ban will be issued at the discretion of the cb7tuner.com staff.

3) No items may be sold in the Beginner forums. Any "for sale" threads will be deleted.

4) Temporarily banned members will be PERMANTLY banned if they are found posting on another account.

The rules can and will be added to. Any updates will be marked in the title.

    Thrown Rod?

This morning I was driving and my car wouldn't accelerate so I pulled off the road and shortly after the car died and wouldn't start. After needing to jump start the car I have a really loud metal on metal noise coming from the head.

I got the car towed and where the car was sitting was a huge puddle of oil, and when I got home I popped my hood and noticed there is oil all over my alternator, which maybe explains the not starting and electrical issues, and oil on my pulleys.

So I'm thinking it's a thrown rod that caused a hole in the case? Any other ideas?

Well, you don't "throw" a rod like you are probably thinking.

When you "throw" a rod, you either blow a hole in the block and the engine will not run at all and the damage is very obvious. Or, you turn a bearing and the rod is no longer getting lubed. Over time the clearance gets wider as the bearing wears down from no lube, and a knocking sets in.

Can you take some pictures of whats going on? Doesn't really sound anything like a bad rod. Its probably not good, but, it could be something simple.

Kind of sounds like your seals went bad and you lost all your oil/oil pressure. In turn you would hear metal and metal noise from engine not be lubricated properly.

valve needing adjustment often sounds like a metal on metal knocking.

        Get some pics yo!

Do you have one of those stupid filters on your PCV system? If so, that can blow oil all over the place. Really theres lots of ways to cause this. Oil could drip onto a belt and get flung around too.

if you can get it to run for even a minute. degrease it, pressure wash it, whichever. let it dry. spray "foot deodorant" in the aerosol can all over the engine. it will turn white and easily be seen. if the oil is seeping the foot deodorant will keep it in the general area and will leave what looks to be a wet trail. hope you can get something out of that. if its an all of a sudden tap or knock in the top end, you can eliminate valve adjustment.

the balance shaft seal might have walked out. not uncommon. Honda came out with a retainer that holds that seal in. I have seen many of cb7 die because of this.

I was referring to the tapping sound you hear when your valves are needing an adjustment.

Not a grindey metal on metal, a tapping kind of noise. Like a pinging/ticking/tapping sound. When the valves are out of adjustment, they are noisy.

There's a big difference between valve ticking sound and rod knocking sound. Grinding sound of metals is entirely different sound, as well.

Ticking valve does not cause external oil leak. So, I was a bit surprised and confused to have that referenced here on the OP's issue.

All he said was metal on metal, and I was suggesting it as an example when the sound could be normal. The guy that mentioned it said something about the seals going out, which would turn into a metal on metal sound from lack of lubrication. Something like that. So I threw that out there as a normal reason for a similar sound just the same. And, honestly it would be. The ticking noise heard in the valve train you hear when low on oil, is almost the same as when valves are out of adjustment.

i dunno, it made sense to me. Lol. I suppose I could've been clearer.

Do you guys think it would be more efficient to just get a new motor? With all the time and money I will put into not only figuring out what's wrong but fixing it as well..

New motor, do you mean professionally overhauled/rebuilt motor?

                          Or, just another used motor?

If it was me, I would work on existing motor and repair.

If you buy another used motor you may be in the same situation in a few 100-1000 miles. Buying a reman motor would be more then just maintaining the motor you have. IMO
