    92 Auto Tranny Help

I just bought a 92 Accord LX. The previous owner said it had transmission problems and that it needed solenoids. I ordered a set of solenoids and tested all 4 before I did anything. The shift solenoid on the transmission made a click when 12V was applied to it, but it was very faint on both sides of it. I changed out the solenoid, drove the car and it seemed fine. I came back home and took it out again an hour later. The car did fine at first and then started revving and not shifting. I made it home finally.

The next day, I pulled the TCU and found a burnt resistor. I replaced that. I got it back together last night and test drove it. It did great for about 5 minutes, then back to the revving and not shifting again. I pulled the ECU fuse and checked all my connections again this morning. I started out and everything was great. I went less that half a mile and had no forward gears. I pushed it off the road and restarted the car, it had all gears. I took it home and parked it.

I received another TCU today that was tested and in working order. I hooked it up, changed the tranny fluid, and went for a test drive. I went 3 miles and everything was great. I thought it was fixed, then suddenly the non shifting started again. I got it home, went to turn it around in the driveway and once I shifted out of reverse, I had no forward gears again. Once again a turn off and restart gave me forward gears. I pulled up, put it in reverse and parked it. I tried the gears and had no forward gears again.

Any ideas on what could be happening? I really need this car to be on the road. I have a new Main Relay and TPS to install if need be also.

Are you getting a flashing D4 light or a D4 light that is on regardless of what gear you are in? Regardless I would recommend that you check the TCU for any stored codes. When you replaced the solenoids, did you replace just the one or both sets? Also did you make sure the mounting surface on the transmission was clean, if it's dirty or corroded the solenoid would have improper ground.

No flashing or solid D4 light, unless I have the transmission in D4. I checked the TCU and got no codes at all. I only replaced the lower one. I cleaned it, but I may check it again.

Mine did the same thing soon after I bought it. The only thing that fixed it was getting a new transmission. Fortunately they are relatively cheap... bought mine for $350. If you go that way I recomend just dropping the entire engine out. Makes it much easier to put the new one on.

That's half of what I paid for the car! LOL I'm gonna mess with it some more before I buy a new tranny.

I got a transmission for $200 from a local Honda salvage yard. Gonna try and swap it in the next couple weeks.

Finally got time to work on it and got the transmission out. Is it that hard to get it back in without taking out the engine? It was a pain getting it out.

Lower the engine a bit. It makes it much easier.

Much easier to pull the whole engine when dealing with an auto.

I put the transmission in the 2nd time by myself.
Raise it up and get the bolts in first, then do the trans mount last.
I would start with the bolts under car twords the back and then move to the front bolts.

Sounds like a plan. Thanks for the help. I started dropping it and it wouldn't go down, then I found a bolt holding a wire bunch still attached to the trans. It was holing the entire thing up.

Sorry to jump into this thread but couldn't create my own. I just got my 1992 accord back after sitting for about six months. It ran fine until I changed the battery. Afterwards the D4 light blinks and it's the vehicle feels sluggish in forward gears. This happens intermittently. If its not flashing it seems to run fine. I pulled TCU codes: 1,2,3,5,7,8,14. I haven't had a chance to inspect the TCU itself yet. You guys think it might be the problem? Any advice? Thanks for any help in advanced. Appreciate it . And sorry again for jumping into this thread.

Just removed the TCU and opened it up. No signs of dark, burnt, or damaged spots. Any ideas? Thanks.
