So I snapped a "actually the left and lower" bolt that fastens my heat shield to the block. Tried easy out, tried chisel to try to screw the bolt out to no avail so I'm pretty much done with the heat shield for the time being...question one; how detrimental is it to ride around without my heat shield (it's been without for about a week and 1/2 now) question two; I've got some rustolium 2000° flat black engine paint, is it a dummy move to try and paint my stock headers because they look even worse than the actual heat shield did...I was going to spend about $180 on a set of after markets but in California I can kiss passing smog good bye and I've read so much against header wrap I won't even try my luck with those...Any suggestions or advice would be greatly appreciated thanks

ANY BUYING/SELLING IN THIS FORUM WILL RESULT IN AN INSTANT BAN!
Read the rules: http://www.cb7tuner.com/vbb/showthread.php?t=43956
Myself, and the other mods have been very nice and lenient with the rules. We have been deleting threads, and giving out warnings. Some members didn't get the clue and re-posted over and over... Now ANY member buying or selling in this section will be banned... No IF's AND's or BUT's.

Beginner Forum Rules - EVERYBODY read! (old and new members alike!)
Beginners start here. Once you have 30 worthwhile posts (off topic doesn't count) you may post outside of the Beginner forums. Any "whoring" (posting simply to raise your post count) will return your count to 0, or result in a ban.
These are the rules. Read them. Live by them.
1) Absolutely NO flaming! "Flaming" is an outright attack on a member. ALL questions are encouraged to be asked here, no matter how basic. Members with over 30 posts will be subject to a ONE WEEK ban if caught flaming in this forum (and yes, moderators can read deleted posts). Members with under 30 posts will be subject to a ONE DAY ban.
2) Use appropriate language. Racial or sexual slurs will not be tolerated. A ban will be issued at the discretion of the cb7tuner.com staff.
3) No items may be sold in the Beginner forums. Any "for sale" threads will be deleted.
4) Temporarily banned members will be PERMANTLY banned if they are found posting on another account.
The rules can and will be added to. Any updates will be marked in the title.
The rules for the overall forum can be found here:

My advice would be to just leave it. It doesn't hurt anything at all with the heat shield being off.My Members' Ride Thread - It's a marathon build, not a sprint. But keep me honest on the update frequency!

You can paint it if you want (it's just a single header, not "headers") It won't hurt anything, but as said, it's not necessary. It's highly unlikely that the stock manifold is going to rust out. If it cracks, it'll only do so due to heat and age, and that would be unavoidable regardless of whether or not you paint it or reinstall the heat shield. Nothing should be damaged by the unshielded manifold. The slight increase in heat in the immediate area may cause premature wear of wire sheathing and paint on the hood... but not likely enough to matter. I've heard (not confirmed by any official sources) that the heat shield was only intended to protect careless hands under the hood.
If you want something better looking, you can get a CARB approved header that will allow you to pass smog. DC Sports makes a decent one. Not exactly cheap, but it's quality.
