Beginner Forum Rules - EVERYBODY read! (old and new members alike!)
Beginners start here. Once you have 30 worthwhile posts (off topic doesn't count) you may post outside of the Beginner forums. Any "whoring" (posting simply to raise your post count) will return your count to 0, or result in a ban.
These are the rules. Read them. Live by them.
1) Absolutely NO flaming! "Flaming" is an outright attack on a member. ALL questions are encouraged to be asked here, no matter how basic. Members with over 30 posts will be subject to a ONE WEEK ban if caught flaming in this forum (and yes, moderators can read deleted posts). Members with under 30 posts will be subject to a ONE DAY ban.
2) Use appropriate language. Racial or sexual slurs will not be tolerated. A ban will be issued at the discretion of the cb7tuner.com staff.
3) No items may be sold in the Beginner forums. Any "for sale" threads will be deleted.
4) Temporarily banned members will be PERMANTLY banned if they are found posting on another account.
The rules can and will be added to. Any updates will be marked in the title.
The rules for the overall forum can be found here:
http://www.cb7tuner.com/vbb/forumdisplay.php?f=144
Read them. You will be expected to follow them.

Amsoil!Originally posted by KINGPIN33Besides a K&N filter, what other filters provide good filtration that are not as expensive as Apexi?
I saw a Ractive one in my Canadian Tire, but people say to stay away from those.
These are very good filters. Very good air flow and filter better than KnN.
Nanofiber technology!

If anyone is interested, I sell them.
To help answer a few questions above. Don't worry about running rich, if it runs that way at all. The difference isn't significant enough that the computer can't adjust AF(air/fuel) ratio to compensate. Yes, switching to 10/40 will help with blow by and your oil eating problem. However, the thicker oil will take longer the fully lubricate your engine on start up. It will take slightly longer to start as well. You'll also see a hit in your MPG.WTB - IACV for H22a4.

Thanks, Koffin. I'll go with 10/40 to pass the emissions test, then go back to 5/30.Originally posted by koffinTo help answer a few questions above. On the air/fuel ratio, I read somewhere that the ECU controls that anyway, I couldn't change it without major hacking.
I'm guessing that overall the increased airflow from the new filter should help the engine burn cleaner, so I'll keep the mod filter in for the test, I think. I'm looking for other suggestions re: burning cleanly to pass emissions in another thread.
Thanks for the info.

As you can see, there's a green beans can with masking tape that joins the filter and the Honda pipe... I bought a 3" exhaust outlet tip that I'm going to saw the ends off of to replace the beans can
I went to about 10 auto parts stores, and that's the only way I could come up with a decent looking 3" tube.

Here is a picture of the intake off of the CRX.........
The filter was originally on the left side of this picture.....

I took this pipe and flipped it around so that the filter was on the other end. I took it out to the car and marked on the pipe what needed cut off.
Then I took a muffler pipe cutting tool (rentable at most chain car parts stores) and I cut what I didnt need off of it. I could of used part of the pipe to do a ghetto short ram, but I wanted an all metal pipe if I could. Here is a picture of the pipe after I cut it down, also a picture of what the stock would of looked like with the ghetto SR.

I know it doesnt look like it would fit but believe me it fits good. I went out to my garage and found a nice piece of 3 inch rubber hose ( I actually robbed it off of a aftermarket head pipe from one of my jetski's). I used the hose to connect the new pipe to the intake mani. On the factory tube there was one vacume line and then on for crankcase ventilation, the vacume line fitting I pulled out of the factory intake tub with a pliers, then I made a small hole in the rubber where I connected the pipe to the intake mani. I pulled that factory fitting through my new rubber hose ( Its a nice tight fit) and then hooked the vacume line back up to it just like it was from the factory.
The crankcase ventilation I am just going to remove that hose and put a breather on top of the intake manifold.
But doe pipe fit? It fits great, I will take a picture of it later, I am sick right now and took those pictures there while I was making it a couple days ago.
I know not everybody has a SR laying around from a CRX but I just though I would put this out there as another thing somebody could do....Last edited by ALOW1; 12-03-2006, 05:01 AM.

For those of you who know CT, when I go home from work I get on Route 72 West at exit 8. An eighth of a mile after the on-ramp there's a hill. Before I put on the short ram, I never thought about it much, I shifted according to engine sounds and was always still in fourth over that hill, then shifted into fifth after I got over the top. After I put on the short ram, I was a little confused, because I was bogging down a little on that hill... until I realized that I was in fifth instead of fourth as I always had been. Which means without driving harder, I was going faster.Originally posted by do2mindHey... after a day of driving, I have to say I can definitely notice the difference... more so torque than horsepower, I think.
The biggest benefit: there's a 3 mile long hill on my way home from work that used to bog the engine down to the point where I'd take off cruise control, and sometimes even downshift (on the interstate). I drove it twice today, both times I kept it in cruise in 5th without feeling bogged down.
And I'm also a lot more aware of exactly how hard the engine is working, even though it's not much louder, the sounds I do get are more distinctive to what's specifically going on under the hood.
I'll know what it does to mileage in a couple hundred miles.
I've seen it posted to expect 3-6 hp from a short ram... I definitely got more than that, I'd say about 10%, which would be what, like 10+? (and ghetto, at that) I checked out my old air filter, and it still looks almost new... so that's not it. But I may be generalizing a little by combining an increase in torque and hp. I've still got the stock air filter, it would be interesting to dyno it with both setups for both torque and hp.
I've seen it posted to expect negligible mileage boost from a short ram... I got a mileage boost (~ 3-4 mpg) (I actually got about 6-7, but that's driving a tad easier than normal feel wise and top speed wise, but like I said, I was still going faster without realizing it in acceleration situations)
[383 miles on 13.7 gallons = 28mpg, I normally get about 21-22]Last edited by do2mind; 12-03-2006, 01:05 PM.

True but at the same time the inside of the stock tube isnt smooth. I mean its smooth but where the bends and stuff are there are ridges which IMO would make turbulance and be more restrictive. Looks are not everything, I agree. For you budjet minded people, do the ghetto short ram when your broke. You can always upgrade the pipe later.Originally posted by KINGPIN33^^^ Good idea... rubber hose = less heat soak and is much cheaper, but doesn't look as good as shiny pipe.
