Anybody have a problem with the control for their windshield wipers being flaky?
When I turn the twisty for the wipers, 9 times out of 10, the wipers don't come on. I have to wiggle the twisty back and forth until I find a magical spot between the clicks where the wipers actually work. After the wipers have been going for 2 to 10 minutes, I can switch the twisty into it's normal groove, and the wipers work fine. If I leave my wipers on when I turn off the car, they always work fine (start wiping) the next time I turn on the car, but if I then try to switch to a different speed, I start the game all over again.
In heavy traffic or heavy rain, this is a real pain in the butt if I can't get it to work for a few minutes.
I originally thought there were some worn contacts in the twisty... but it was like this when I bought the car 6 years ago (ironically when I tried the wipers in the test drive they worked just fine), but if that (worn out) was the case, it probably would have been getting progressively worse, and it's stayed about the same.
Can I replace this damn thing?
I've heard that messing with the steering column is a job for the dealership because of the airbag... is that true? (I think Chilton's says don't mess with it, Haynes says be careful, or vice versa)
