How does warming do this? I thoguht it just took in heat from the engine... how does this work?

I mean excessive time spent warming up your car or idling.

Well I got fuel again today and not much better. 151.2 miles with 7.383 gallons = 20.479 mpg. I am not a happy camper. Are all these people flat out lying that say they get 30+ or is that a possibility when the weather changes? This car seems to run really well so I am having a hard time believing that it will improve 10 mpg in warmer weather! I guess I will start checking things out (plugs, wires, cap, rotor, a little seafoam) - any other suggestions?

I ran half a can of Seafoam through the PCV hose. I also checked and found the air filter a little dirty and actually it looked like a mouse had been chewing on it a little so I changed it out. Next I check the plugs and although they did look great - they were Champions so I changed them out to NGK v-power because everyone seems to say how they work the best.

When I ran the Seafoam through I noticed the smoke coming from under the car and discovered what appears to be a leaky flex pipe. Would that affect the way the car runs and drives? It isn't loud or anything but is is leaking by evidence of smoke exiting from that area. Cheap suggestions for a fix on this?

              Keep it coming everyone!

if its leaking from before the o2 sensor then it will definatly kill your gas mileage

Here's the deal. First, there are two different types of gasoline, sort of. They have cold weather gas and warm weather gas. I can't remember what is different about them, but I do remember that cold weather gas doesn't get as good mileage. Also, in cold air, your going to use more fuel, because you are taking in more oxygen. It's the same idea as adding a cold air intake to your car. Colder air is more condensed and contains more oxygen, if your sucking in more oxygen, your car is going to respond and put in more fuel. It's pretty simple. And I have never heard of anyone actually get low 30's from a CB7, even a 5 speed.

The last tank yielded 22.5 mpg so I guess that is 2 mpg better than before! I have found that when I fill the tank completely there is a leak in the gas tank. I need to drop the tank to check that out - but I am guessing that it is not helping the mpg. 2nd - I have confirmed that my flexpipe is leaking. I noticed that the o2 sensor is right in front of that so I assume this won't affect the reading?

I am amazed at the difference in price on getting the flexpipe replaced. I have gotten 3 quotes - 250, 150 and 110. The one for 110 is a guy I have used several times in the past and he said they use some kind of new style ting that lasts a lot longer than the flexpipe does? He said it is like the new Honda's have? I would just hit up the junk yard and replace this myself - but I am guessing that by the time I break off the bolts to the cat converter and end up spending a day getting that put back together the 110 will seem like a bargain! Any thoughts?

Oh - and I also replaced the air filter and put new NGK plugs in it.

on a trip to oklahoma and back from dallas, I did 410mi+ on 13 gallons. And I have an automatic.

As I mentioned earlier, in the winter they ad ethenol, which actually gives you a bit more power but doesn't get as good of milage. Stock tunes are already a bit rich to begin with, and when more air (ie from being extra cold outside) is added our car's computers tend to overcompensate fuel and thus burn more than necessary. You could actually get better milage in the cold if the tune wasn't rich because of the easeir combustion needing really less power to have the same level of output.

                          Upate 2-21
This weekend I tried to track down a fuel smell I had when I filled the tank up complete and discovered that the gasket between the fuel tank and the meter setup was torn and definitely not sealing correctly. When I filled the tank up completely a bunch of gas would leak out and spill on the ground. I have the gasket on order from the dealer - but in the mean time I did my best to get it put back in place.

The temps here in MN this week have been 40 degrees and I have driven 219 miles. This morning I got fuel and put in 6.627 gallons - netting more than 33 miles to the gallon! I have no idea why there is such a big difference (ambient temps, meter gasket, new air filter and plugs?) but my gas mileage on this tank (and I filled it until it was to the top of the fill spout!) went up more than 33%! I am a happy camper and obviously I will keep logging it to see if it stays high. Sweet!

3-1 - My last 2 tanks yielded 28.5 mpg and 27.9 mpg so things somehow are now where I expected them to be? I also fixed the gasket tonight on the fuel meter and had my leaky flexpipe replaced so I will see what happens now. If I stay this good in crappy winter weather (it has been snowing here) with winter blended fuel then I will be over 30 in the summer for sure! I love this car!
