ANY BUYING/SELLING IN THIS FORUM WILL RESULT IN AN INSTANT BAN!

Read the rules: http://www.cb7tuner.com/vbb/showthread.php?t=43956

Myself, and the other mods have been very nice and lenient with the rules. We have been deleting threads, and giving out warnings. Some members didn't get the clue and re-posted over and over... Now ANY member buying or selling in this section will be banned... No IF's AND's or BUT's.

Beginner Forum Rules - EVERYBODY read! (old and new members alike!)

Beginners start here. Once you have 30 worthwhile posts (off topic doesn't count) you may post outside of the Beginner forums. Any "whoring" (posting simply to raise your post count) will return your count to 0, or result in a ban.

These are the rules. Read them. Live by them.

1) Absolutely NO flaming! "Flaming" is an outright attack on a member. ALL questions are encouraged to be asked here, no matter how basic. Members with over 30 posts will be subject to a ONE WEEK ban if caught flaming in this forum (and yes, moderators can read deleted posts). Members with under 30 posts will be subject to a ONE DAY ban.

2) Use appropriate language. Racial or sexual slurs will not be tolerated. A ban will be issued at the discretion of the cb7tuner.com staff.

3) No items may be sold in the Beginner forums. Any "for sale" threads will be deleted.

4) Temporarily banned members will be PERMANTLY banned if they are found posting on another account.

The rules can and will be added to. Any updates will be marked in the title.

    Advanced Ignition Timing?

So I've got a stock f22a6. When I first got it I had a certified honda mechanic neighbor of mine replace the t-belt and water pump... he also said he'd do something to make it faster. I was like okay... turns out he advanced the timing. Now that I'm reading up I'm not sure if this is good or not, it felt better but I've also heard it could be bogging the engine or what not. Should I leave it or get it back to stock. If so... do I have to have tuning stuff to bring it back to stock?
    Thanks for the help guys.

Advancing the timing will give you better responce but your gas mileage will suffer in the process. You should have a timing light if you want to set it back to factory specs.

Thats part of it, advancing timing can cause detonation, poor gas mileage, etc. But that is all relative to how many degrees it was advanced... Have you noticed any changes?

        How does gas mileage suffer???

You want to run as much advance as possible with out detination to give you the most MPG and throttle response and alittle extra HP.

The only time you want stock or acouple of degrees less is when/if you have to get your car E-tested...

Oh ya the only way mileage gonna suffer is because you cant keep your foot off the gas pedal.

Well it happened a while ago, when I first got the car so I didn't have it too long to make serious notices. But at the time it sure felt faster, and at higher rpm's the engine sounds wayyy nicer. Definitely more response, didn't have it long enough to notice mpg... but I do notice my mpg isn't great. But I do venture up in rpms a bit, so I figure it's me. I honestly don't know how many degrees it was advanced, I could find out. He knows what he's doing, so I assume he wouldn't do anything to break it. But hey, can't always know.

Oh yeah...? What's a timing light?

Sorry I don't understand, set to stock and advance 3 degrees? If it's already advanced why would I change it back just to advance it again? And want i/e but I don't really have money... high school. Waste of time.

when the timing is too far advanced, the spark will happen to soon. What that will do is cause an unnormal(is that a word? LOL) combustion. pressure rises in the cylinder causing an explosion, instead of timed, controlled burning. Worst case scenerio is engine damage.

When the honda tech advanced the timing , he moved the spark foward. Like say..umm daylight savings time. We move an hour foward. Thats kind of what he did with your spark. The purpose of this free mod(lol) is to allow more time for proper combustion.

Gives air/fuel mixture more burn time. Creating more power,BUT also because all the fuel is burned, results in better MPG. Theorectically...............When you advance the timing, you advance it to the maximum allowable peak. engine idle and power should increase. When you retard the timing engine temperature rises and idle lowers..

Okay, thanks a lot guys. Looks like it should be okay where it's at, assuming he didn't put it forward too much. If I ever see him outside I'll see if he remembers.

Oh, and don't forget how the engine sounds louder and more powerful!

When there is detonation, there is unused gas being dumped into the combustion chamber thus wasting gas. Yes it is good to get the best possible a/f mixture by advancing timing, but too much is going to hurt mpg...

Its not hard to advance the timming.
Only 3 bolts to loosen the dist. and turn it one way or the other...
If the idle goes up if you advance and down if you retard it...
                          snug it when done

If you have detonation happening it sounds like marbles bouncing around in a can.

I have not actually not heard my honda detonate. My V8 i have heard afew times when i filled up with supposed 94 octane but it definantly wasn't (10.5-1 iron headed sbc)

You can safely advance or retard timing up to 2 degrees. There are marks on the flywheel that indicate this safety zone. With proper precautions (and preferrably on a dyno) you can advance a bit more if gains can be realized by doing so.

Where would I look for this area to change it? I want ot see where it's at, it's probably at 2 and I'll end up leaving it... Just wanted to make sure I wasn't hurting in thing because my car if feeling really slow. Onto looking into a spark plug seal leak.
