Myself, and the other mods have been very nice and lenient with the rules. We have been deleting threads, and giving out warnings. Some members didn't get the clue and re-posted over and over... Now ANY member buying or selling in this section will be banned... No IF's AND's or BUT's.

    engine noise

sup guys its been a min since i posted but i need some help. my cb7 has been giving me some trouble lately. the exhaust manifold needed to be replaced after making it sound like a dump truck. now im getting this clicking/ticking noise from the motor that sounds a lot like the valves ticking but i know how that sounds and im sure its not that. when im stopped in nuetral and idle, it doesnt do it. but once i start to go it ticks. its hard to "explain" the sound by typing it. i took it to a guy and he said that it needs a head gasket.

is the head gasket the same as the valve cover gasket?

would it be just a simple gasket that would make an engine "tick/click"?

i know i prob wont get the exact answer from just this diagnosis but i welcome all suggestions on possibilities i should look at?

thanks guys and one again...GREAT SITE!!!!!

the VC gasket and the head gasket are two different parts and will cost way more to replace when taken to the shop. the VC gasket is a simple thing to do
but i doubt that will solve your ticking sound. people usually only change that when there's oil leaking out of the valve cover.

what you're probably hearing is the notorious Honda tick but for just shits and giggles, you should just do a valve lash and a tune up to see if that helps quiet it down a bit.

As mentioned Honda has a notorious valve tick. Does it happen when you turn? When you drive does it get louder as the revs go up?

Leung.... i have done an oil change and complete tune up and he said that the oil was leaking in the spark plugs because it did need a valve cover gasket....

Nail... it happens all the time... i hear the noise while driving and turning and yes as the revs go up it gets louder. i find myself having to shift gears at very low rpms between 2000-3000 at the most to save from hearing that god awful noise...

i only doubted it was the valves because i also have an 02 Lancer with an ass of aftermarket parts and when i used to drive it hard the valves would tick but nothing like this though.. i know the lancer has an aluminum engine so its prob quieter when valves tick but my cb7 sounds horrible. seems like its coming from the bottom end but im just going by ear... Thanks guys... Yall are great!!!!

ummm, I think it is coming from your cracked exhaust manifold. 110 % sure that is is. I bet at cold start up, you hear that noise too. then it goes away when warmed huh? then it comes back when you go or when you rev the engine. most likely it is coming from your cracked exhaust manifold.

ticking for the first 5 or 10 minutes

After I start my car and accelerate, it makes a ticking sound too. But after running for about 10 minutes it's gone. It's fairly quite, if I have music playing at an average level I can't hear the ticking sound. I hear it the loudest between about 1,500 and 3,000 rpm's, any higher and you can't hear it at all.

Could it be that my oil takes a few minutes to completely circulate through my engineor something? Would it go away if I used a different oil? I'm using Castrol High Mileage 10w-30 this summer, I'm gonna switch back to 5w-30 soon. I just want to make sure it aint anything serious in the making, and if it is then I want to catch it early. Any idea what this ticking sound is?

Mine's the same as the two above me. Not as bad as the OP.
It is an extra tick in addition to the normal noisy valve train. Goes away as it warms up. Its been doing it for 30k miles or so. I just drive easy till the engine gets some heat and forget about.

Oil didn't change a thing...not the light weight stuff I'm using now, not the 5w-40 HDEO, not even motor honey (STP oil treatment). Used two different Wix filters with no change. Colder ambient temps do make it a little worse.
