ANY BUYING/SELLING IN THIS FORUM WILL RESULT IN AN INSTANT BAN!

Read the rules: http://www.cb7tuner.com/vbb/showthread.php?t=43956

Myself, and the other mods have been very nice and lenient with the rules. We have been deleting threads, and giving out warnings. Some members didn't get the clue and re-posted over and over... Now ANY member buying or selling in this section will be banned... No IF's AND's or BUT's.

Rocker Arm Bolt Broken

    Rocker Arm Bolt Broken

So I took my torque wrench to the appropriate torque setting and I start tightening it. It had said in the manual for the wrench would release when the desired torque was reached. So I went ahead and started tightening and then the bolt snapped. And I just bought the wrench about a few days ago. Well most of the thread part of the bolt is still intact inside the rocker arm and most of the blank park snapped off. Just a little of the thread part of the bolt came off.

Would it be possible to access that broken bolt by taking the rocker assembly out and taking it out from underneath?
Also, where could I buy a replacement bolt and what would the measurements be for that bolt?
And I'm guessing it would not be safe at all to drive the car.

    It would be bolt 12.

btw this is the torque wrenched I used.

Did you keep turning after the "Click"? The click tells you when you have reached your set torque.

Drill the bolt and use an extractor. Dont drive it till you replace the bolt. Get a new bolt from Honda.

Edit: In case you actually did use the wrench properly, but crossthreaded or otherwise damaged the threads in the head. Or even if it was a pre-existing condition. (drill the bolt and extract it, take care with the metal shavings. Tape off anything shavings might fall into and use a magnet THOROUGHLY to clean up after.) Inspect your threads in the head, if they are bad look into a helicoil kit.

There was no click sound at all. I'm very sure. If there was supposed to be a click shouldn't have locked or just released the pressure.

is it one of those shitty ass torque wrenches that they shouldnt be allowed to sell?

also, did you use assembly lube so the torqueing wasnt on a dry thread load?

Well it is a Powerbuilt brand torque wrench for 25ish bucks. Nope afraid I did not use assembly lube. I'm pretty sure I didn't see that in the DIY here and the Chilton manual.

            ha hahahahaha, brings back memories...........

you broke one of the little ones in the back right, the ones near the distributor, or the other end??????

if so, just reorder them from majestic honda.com

and depending on how many you've broken, yes the car is drive-able, as long as you've only broken 1 of them(the little ones), if the big ones were broken, dont even try

i broke the one in the upper right corner around cylinder 4 sparkplug, i replaced it a couple of weeks later but i drove my car under 4k in EVERY SINGLE GEAR, to not lift the rocker arm assembly

you will also have to drill out that one that broke, CAREFULLY, clean it w/a tap of approriate size, and put the new one in

BUT IF YOU HAVE DOWN-TIME, then i advise not to drive the car until fixed, i couldnt b/c i had to work for a couple of weeks to get another one

Yeah, I would try to spend no less than like 100 on a torque wrench. You have to put trust into your torque wrench and if it fails you, well, this happens.

But I don't think you'll have any trouble if you just extract the broke one and buy another from honda.

on the stairs, she grabs my arm, says whats up,
where you been, is something wrong?
i try to just smile, and say everything’s fine.

my torque wrench was 80 and the longer one was 130

yup it was the little one on the opposite end of the distributor. that snap sent a chill down my spine and made me very depressed. Well I guess I learned my lesson even though it was the hard way. I'll be saving up for a good torque wrench and looking into buying that replacement bolt.

I'm guessing the bolt that needs to be replaced is illustration #10? The small one.

I picked up a craftsman torque wrench on sale for something like 75 bux, Just be sure you take care of it, store it somewhere where it wont get banged up, and release tension on the spring whenever it isnt in use.

If you try to drill and extract it out, that will NOT be an easy task.

so make sure before you buy the bolt that you can take the old broken bolt out first.
