ANY BUYING/SELLING IN THIS FORUM WILL RESULT IN AN INSTANT BAN!

Read the rules: http://www.cb7tuner.com/vbb/showthread.php?t=43956

Myself, and the other mods have been very nice and lenient with the rules. We have been deleting threads, and giving out warnings. Some members didn't get the clue and re-posted over and over... Now ANY member buying or selling in this section will be banned... No IF's AND's or BUT's.

Beginner Forum Rules - EVERYBODY read! (old and new members alike!)

Beginners start here. Once you have 30 worthwhile posts (off topic doesn't count) you may post outside of the Beginner forums. Any "whoring" (posting simply to raise your post count) will return your count to 0, or result in a ban.

These are the rules. Read them. Live by them.

1) Absolutely NO flaming! "Flaming" is an outright attack on a member. ALL questions are encouraged to be asked here, no matter how basic. Members with over 30 posts will be subject to a ONE WEEK ban if caught flaming in this forum (and yes, moderators can read deleted posts). Members with under 30 posts will be subject to a ONE DAY ban.

2) Use appropriate language. Racial or sexual slurs will not be tolerated. A ban will be issued at the discretion of the cb7tuner.com staff.

3) No items may be sold in the Beginner forums. Any "for sale" threads will be deleted.

4) Temporarily banned members will be PERMANTLY banned if they are found posting on another account.

The rules can and will be added to. Any updates will be marked in the title.

While I have the head off... tips?

Hi guys. I'm 90% sure my head gasket needs replacing. While I have the head off, do you have any tips for some maintenance/simple upgrades I could do?
I feel that if I could improve my engine some, it'd be a waste to ignore it while the head is off the block.

    Thanks for any suggestions guys.

EDIT: PS, My engine is the F22A1, I've got a short ram intake, a cat/test pipe, and Bosch Platinum 2 plugs if that aids in suggestions. I'll probably be swapping in an F22A6 cam I've picked up as well.

Do a DIY! With lots of pics!

Otherwise... I dunno. What are your eventual goals for this motor? If you can afford some downtime, I believe ESP does headwork for a VERY reasonable price. A simple P&P might be good. A new valvetrain, or at least new springs, could be cool... and maybe even a cam regrind.

If you don't really want to modify it, just clean it up. Clean all the carbon deposits off of the combustion chambers, make sure the valves are sealing properly. Look for any sort of obvious wear. Maybe even use some sandpaper to do a mild polishing job yourself. Can't hurt! You might want to wait for someone more knowledgeable on the subject to offer more information on that, though.

Don't forget to upgrade to a chipped, or at least an a6 ECU. That way your getting everything you can from the new cam, otherwise your only shooting yourself in the foot. Later

            Thanks for the help guys!
This is my daily driver, so I'm not looking for anything serious in upgrades (I don't even have a header/A4 manifold, lol). I'm most concerned with preventive maintenance. General cleaning is what I had in mind, and since I've never done it, cleaning out the EGR valleys would probably be a good idea as well I assume.

I'm not going with a regrind cam BECAUSE I'd have to run a chipped ECU. I'd like to leave the car as reliable as possible, hence the OEM cam. I have no idea who to talk to about chipping ECU's anyway, and I know of noone in my area who tunes them.
Anybody have an A6 ECU for an auto?

And BTW, thanks again for the tips.
Also, I'll keep that DIY in mind.

I just wish it wasn't my head gasket... (sigh) But I'm pretty sure it is, because I've been losing water with no leaks, and I checked my radiator the other day and there was foam inside (gases from cylinders I'm thinking). I can't check the tailpipe for water vapor really, because here in summer it's so humid you can't tell any difference. I'm about to roll 200k, so the head gasket replacement will probably give it a new lease on life, hehe.

I had an idea for a budget build back in the day. H23 intake manifold/milled the head .010 just to bump the compression a bit/delta 262 regrind/chipped p06/nitrous kit. But plumb the nitrous kit into the bottom of the h23 intake manifold so it can't be easily noticed. i/h/e and you have a nice sleeper on your hands.
