Can't get the 17mm bolt off my Akebono Caliper!!

Can't get the 17mm bolt off my Akebono Caliper!!

Bought new pads today for my front Akebono Calipers.

Tried to unbolt the lower 17mm bolt so I could just swing the caliper body up without having to remove the entire assembly from the rotor.

But the 17mm bolt will NOT budge, no matter how hard I try.

How can I get it off? HELP!!!

Uhh theres two 14mm as I recall size wise. Just loosen the top and take off the bottom and it should tip up. The two 17 in the back just hold the caliper on. That takes off the complete caliper dunno if your machining your rotors but if your not kinda pointless taking them off.

Nope, mine are definitely 17mm...just checked.

Actually, I am certain, my front calipers use 2 17mm bolts for the bracket and also 2 17mm bolts for the entire assembly. I know my calipers are not Nissin, however instead of the overlapping triangle symbols (which are suppossed to be Akebono), mine has what looks like a nuclear hazzard symbol (three triangles pointing inward at a center point), sorta like the mitsubishi symbol. I assumed that was a variant of the Akebono symbol. Am I mistaken? I noticed someone else describe theirs the same way. Could be that there are in fact 3 kinds of calipers that come OEM on these cars.

I see then use a breaker bar thats the easiest way. If not if you have a pretty big box end wrench that works well too. IF you dont have any of those get the ratchet on there with the proper sized pipe on the handle and go at it. Honestly I have never had to use pb blaster to take off these bolts. Just a breaker bar if not a decently sized box end wrench.

Well, so far I've only tried to undo the passenger side bolt. The bolt is on the back side, so when I'm turning it with the wrench handle pointing towards the front of the car, I'm pushing the handle "down" towards the ground. I even stepped on it, shoved on it, used a hammer to pound down on it....nothing happened. I pushed so hard the socket came off the bolt and my bare knuckles came pounding down onto the pavement. Ouch.

I can't even imagine being able to even apply as much force on the driver side caliper as on that side I'll have to be pulling "up" on the wrench to turn it (lefty loosie).

Please tell me I wasn't turning the bolt the wrong way!

its easier to break a bolt when your pulling up than it is when your pushing down

have you went and bought a can of pb blaster yet?????????? iam telling you it will help ALOT

oh and as far as busting knuckels go.... if your going to work on a car.... its going to happen alot

First of all make sure you are turning the bolt the right way.

Soak the bolt in pb blaster as mentioned before.

Then get someone else to help you out. One person pulls onto the wrench, from under the front of the car while the other person pushes it forward from the side of the car right beside the caliper. Do this whilst both of you are holding onto the wrench firmly.

That's how I got mine off.

That has happened to me before. The bolt you are refering to is the slider pin. I had a case of where it got rusted on the slider part and when I was trying to take it out, the bolt snapped leaving the smooth part inside the bracket and the treaded part in my hands.

If you are just changing pads and the bolt is stuck. Just take off the 2 17mm ones on the back of the caliper. Those hold the entire assembly on the hub.

I tried that too. THose bolts won't budge either. I've done this successfully before on my civic, but it only had 12mm bolts I believe. Not as hard to turn.
