ANY BUYING/SELLING IN THIS FORUM WILL RESULT IN AN INSTANT BAN!

Read the rules: http://www.cb7tuner.com/vbb/showthread.php?t=43956

Myself, and the other mods have been very nice and lenient with the rules. We have been deleting threads, and giving out warnings. Some members didn't get the clue and re-posted over and over... Now ANY member buying or selling in this section will be banned... No IF's AND's or BUT's.

Beginner Forum Rules - EVERYBODY read! (old and new members alike!)

Beginners start here. Once you have 30 worthwhile posts (off topic doesn't count) you may post outside of the Beginner forums. Any "whoring" (posting simply to raise your post count) will return your count to 0, or result in a ban.

These are the rules. Read them. Live by them.

1) Absolutely NO flaming! "Flaming" is an outright attack on a member. ALL questions are encouraged to be asked here, no matter how basic. Members with over 30 posts will be subject to a ONE WEEK ban if caught flaming in this forum (and yes, moderators can read deleted posts). Members with under 30 posts will be subject to a ONE DAY ban.

2) Use appropriate language. Racial or sexual slurs will not be tolerated. A ban will be issued at the discretion of the cb7tuner.com staff.

3) No items may be sold in the Beginner forums. Any "for sale" threads will be deleted.

4) Temporarily banned members will be PERMANTLY banned if they are found posting on another account.

The rules can and will be added to. Any updates will be marked in the title.

The rules for the overall forum can be found here:

    Loose Steering - Violent Shake

So every now and then I have this vibration in the steering. I have a torn boot on my driver side and when I say torn I mean 1/4inch maybe grease leaked out idk. The axle is only a couple of years old and the grease around it I believe was from the old axle.

Up until now I thought I had to replace it. Today (in the snow ) I could really feel the car. I won't lie, I was drifting in a parking lot (empty) and realized that there was something in the car, in the dash, in front of the steering wheel that was shaking, vibrating making a rackety noise. I don't know anything about how the steering wheel works but something in there was shaking bad and I think I've mistaken it for the axle problem.

Would this still be an axle problem, or is there no axle problem and there is something up with my steering components?

I felt it most when I was coming to a harsh stop or turning and spinning the tires or something like that, it was defiantly apparent. Before today, every now and then I would have a weird ticking, clicking noise come from the dash when I would slow down, at random, not too often. I also felt the vibration when driving sometimes at random and figured it was the axle...

What do you guys think? Thanks.

If the boot is torn on that axle, the joint will dry up and it will be shot. New England winters will kill it in a month or two, as soon as the salt starts going down. Change that axle.

You may have done one (or more) of 3 things, as far as I can guess...

You may have damaged your tie rods
You may have damaged your steering rack
You may have thrown your wheels off balance

All three would cause some disturbance in the steering wheel

Don't rule out the axle, either...

Yea I'll still replace the axle. I'll look into the tie rods. How would I go about checking the steering rack? That sounds like something I would have to have a dealership fix.. maybe not? I have manged to do everything myself so far.. lol

I'll read in the Haynes and see if it says anything also. Thanks!

The rack is a pain in the butt to replace, but not something you can't do yourself. This time of year, if you don't have a garage to work in, it wouldn't be fun. It's not a quick job... as a first timer, it'd probably take you all day, or a couple days even. Not hard... just attached to a lot of stuff. I'm not certain on the proper diagnosis of a bad rack, so I won't attempt it, for fear of giving you bad advice. I would think that if it's bad, you might have a leak. Check your power steering fluid level.

The tie rods have ball joints on them, so you should be able to tell if they're bad (the joints, anyway). Chances are, they should be replaced.

Wheel balance is also the one idiot-problem that most people dismiss. Even if you've recently had your wheels balanced, it doesn't mean they're still good... or that they were even done right!

My car does pull to the left a tad, very minimal but it could be a symptom of one of these things. I had a fellow cb7 tuner come over to work on the axle and one of the ball joints had a torn boot so I'm sure they could use replaceing. I'll do the tie rods/axle/ball joints/alignment and hopefully it's not the steering rack haha, and hopefully my pockets can handle it.

          Thanks!

Yeah, DEFINITELY replace those ball joints if the boots are torn as well! Any torn boot is likely to fail in New England winters. Salt will dry those things out very quickly. A failed ball joint is NOT a pretty sight... I had a wrecked CB7 in my driveway. We pulled the motor from it, and it was necessary to pop the lower ball joints to get the axles out... Since the car was going off to the wrecker, I didn't put things back together too tightly.

Anyway, I went to push it further into the driveway one day. My wife sat inside, steering and working the brake (so it didn't roll too far!). After about 6 feet, the car just DROPPED on the passenger side. The ball joint nut popped off, and it separated. Nobody was hurt, nothing bad happened... but seeing how it fell, I wouldn't want to be driving a car even 15mph when that happened! The wheel just flipped out sideways!
