ANY BUYING/SELLING IN THIS FORUM WILL RESULT IN AN INSTANT BAN!

Read the rules: http://www.cb7tuner.com/vbb/showthread.php?t=43956

Myself, and the other mods have been very nice and lenient with the rules. We have been deleting threads, and giving out warnings. Some members didn't get the clue and re-posted over and over... Now ANY member buying or selling in this section will be banned... No IF's AND's or BUT's.

Beginner Forum Rules - EVERYBODY read! (old and new members alike!)

Beginners start here. Once you have 30 worthwhile posts (off topic doesn't count) you may post outside of the Beginner forums. Any "whoring" (posting simply to raise your post count) will return your count to 0, or result in a ban.

These are the rules. Read them. Live by them.

1) Absolutely NO flaming! "Flaming" is an outright attack on a member. ALL questions are encouraged to be asked here, no matter how basic. Members with over 30 posts will be subject to a ONE WEEK ban if caught flaming in this forum (and yes, moderators can read deleted posts). Members with under 30 posts will be subject to a ONE DAY ban.

2) Use appropriate language. Racial or sexual slurs will not be tolerated. A ban will be issued at the discretion of the cb7tuner.com staff.

3) No items may be sold in the Beginner forums. Any "for sale" threads will be deleted.

4) Temporarily banned members will be PERMANTLY banned if they are found posting on another account.

The rules can and will be added to. Any updates will be marked in the title.

The rules for the overall forum can be found here:

Read them. You will be expected to follow them.

Just another oil leak/on sparkplugs thread

    Here's my story:

engine's got 278k miles. Ever since I bought it it's been losing oil. I put cardboard under it once, ran it for like 15-20 minutes, and checked the cardboard, and it was clean.

I changed the oil in October, checked the oil yesterday, and my level is below the first hole on the dip stick.

So I added the only quart of oil I owned. Then just for kicks I checked my plugs, which were drenched in oil. The tube portion of the plug wires is not wet with oil however. It's just the lower portion of the plug - the threads and electrode. So I had a spare set of tube seals (not the lower ones...the ones that go on the valve cover), put those in, replaced the wires and plugs.

    I read this thread:
    http://www.cb7tuner.com/vbb/showthre...lug+tube+seals

Really informative, and a better alternative to replacing your rings. I am hoping my rings are not going/gone, and I don't think they are. The only knowledge I have of piston rings and how to test if they are going bad is:
1.) if you take your oil cap off while running and if it's smoking
2.)if smoke's coming out of your tail pipe

    that's all I know.

I took off the cap while it was running, and no smoke, and my tailpipe does not emit any "bad" smoke as well.

Think just replacing the lower tube seals would call it a day? I don't know where to find these, or what they look like since the pictures are not showing up on that DIY.

I have the Chiltons in my hand, but I don't know what the technical term would be for it haha. I've got a diagram of the rocker arm assembly...no mention of tube seals

The lower tube seals are underneath the valvetrain parts. You must remove the rocker arm assembly to replace them.
Oil would be getting on the lower parts of the plug wires if these seals were the problem, so I'm thinking the rings are a possibility.

well if it's the rings, how could I triple check to make sure it is the rings? Last thing I wanna do is buy and install all new rings...then still burn oil.

EDIT: If I were to replace the O Rings under the rocker arms would it be number 19 here?

Its your lower tube seals. Most likely when you pulled your plugs the oil trickled down to the electrodes. Now if the oil on the tips looks cooked then you have a problem. Ran a compression test and go from there.

Yes, number 19 is the lower spark plug tube seal. The uppers are the ones that sit against the valve cover.
