    Sanding

Im starting to sand down my car for paint. what grit sand paper should i use?

Are you looking to go bare metal on it? Are you just trying to take the clear coat off of it? What kind of supplies do you have? This question is to open ended we need to know what exactly you are trying to get done with your project man. Give us a little more information please. Thanks!

If you are trying to just get the clear off I would say a 1000 grit or so. I would definatly say nothing to coarse. Also use primer with a filler and sand down again for a much smoother finish. I ahve done this before and it has worked ok for me man...

do not go down to the bare metal unless you have to. example, using body filler.

you don't have to sand the clear coat off unless it's flaking or seperating. later.

like said by type g its not necessary to sand to bare metal unless u are fixing dents. there are many diffent ways to sand and many different outcomes, remember 75% of your paint job is prep. if u cut corners prepping your car you WILL see it in the paint job. if you plan on spraying the whole car with color i would sand with 600 as it will cut alot faster.

If I remember right there is an entire paint thread on here somewhere, Ill try to find it.

Not the exact one I was looking for but this is informal enough I think.

You see models at every car show.
But have you ever seen a model that actually takes the car she built to a show?

it should not b necessary to prime unless you have body damage u are repairing. but if you do prime, prep the car with 180 or 220. then prime, then sand the primer with 320 then go back over it THOROUGHLY with 600

just to add my 2 cents if your re-painting a car you should ALWAYS remove all paint down to bare metal this exposes any rust problems that may be hiding from you cut the paint off with 180 grit prefferably using a 6in DA prep metal and skim coat any imperfections with filler use as little as possible prime over with quality materials i hate hearing how so may cut corners on here spray can primer looks like shit and lays like shit spend a little money and have it done right and no im not talking bout mako! after primed hit it with 320 and check one more time finally prime one more coat and hit with 500 then your ready to paint just a hint single stage with no clear turns out wayyy better than base coat clear coat..i have a spotless paintjob on my accord and its beacuse i dont cut corners so take some extra time and make em right

some body shops can do their own paint mixing if they have the right machines. Just ask them.

Make sure u get the right paint code!
