polishing compound, it won't "chrome" it but it will polish it and make it shiny

not just any chrome paint will do. the paint u need to use has to be able to take high amoutn of heat...like grille paint(which ull probably never find in chrome). when things are chrome coated they go through a process of dipping the object into chemicals to clean it, and then finally the liquid chrome coating...its not sumthing u can just do if you wait it actually chrome coated. theres a website somewhere that sells f22x chromed valve covers but i forget what it is...do a google search n ya should find it. also call places in ure area that work with metal n see if they can have things chromed or sent out to be chromed. hopefully that will help ya a little

hey the easiest way i've found to get all that ugly ass black paint off your valve cover is:

go down to autozone buy aircraft paint remover.
warning: don't get that on your hands, just spray down your valve cover and brush it off with a wire brush and its ready to roll.

as far as painting goes, get something pewter, it costs so much to get chrome done.

there was a member here that chromed out his valve cover. but the diy is not anymore.
i already took off the pain and all. now igot to find out a way how to chrome it out. there is a buffer thing that kind of chromes it out but i don't know the name of it.

and i don't wanna pay $50 for a chrome valve cover.

First you will need to know the difference between chrome and polished. Chrome is just a dipped coating kinda like shiny paint if you will, while polished is making the existing metal shine without coating it. And not everything can be polished out, but aluminum and stainless can.

You cant chrome it yourself...you'll have to take it somewhere and have it done.

But you can polish it and get almost the same effect, by sanding it really really smooth then use polishing compound then buff it out.

Yea there is also "chrome" paint, but really its just silver paint.

when sanding it you should start out about 150 then go all the way up to 2000 grit then buff it out with polish compound...

also there is a paint made by ppg it is chrome there has been some cars and motorcycles painted this chrome looks good but it cost 380 a quart

do not use 150 grit! you'll scratch up that cover more than you need to.

here's a the DIY you might have been looking for:

Yea 150 grit it too coarse...if the paint is already removed I'd start with 750+.

                      anyways
what kind of polishint compound should i use and what kind of buffer????
can i use the polish compound that u find at any house hold store or what??
and where can i find the buffer?
i went to a store and i asked them for a buffer for aluminium and they looked at me like i was from another planet..... lol

-when purchasing "wet" sanding paper, its easier to find them at the autoparts store, not home depot. you'll find the necessary grit from 800, 1000, 1200, 1500, 2000 of paper needed

-mothers polishing compound is recommended(my favorite) or anything similar

-to make things easier, use a hand-held electric sander; and between changing the sandpaper to the next grade, clean and polish the valve cover using the polishing compound

You probably didnt find any really fine grit sand paper at home depot because you were looking at wood sand paper...try to autoparts store or even wallmart, but get the kind that is for use on metals, or automotive, but just make sure its not for wood.

well i trashed the valve polishing project. i just painted glossy black,
guess what. when i was painting the paiint wouldn't stick. i letf some small places like i didn't even paint it.
i tryed to pain those places like 2 more times and nothing. it will cover it for a litle bit then no paint will stay on those places. wtf is going on????? i did take off the old paint and i did clean the valve cover. but now that shit won't get painted good.
i am hating this project already.

what type of paint are you using? you're probably going to want to use a very high temp paint.. and it might not because it's too smooth... you can get adhesives to help spraypaint stick.
