Sorry but a DIY is NOT recommended on any bodywork... especially if its custom. Either pay someone who knows what their doing, or get some real hands-on training.

but yeah like layinkit said,, shit is pretty hard, but with enough practice and hands on experience with someone that knows what they are doing, you should be fine

I couldn't disargee more, although shaved door handles are not a very easy job and not the best for a first attempt. if you have the ability to work well with your hands nothing is beyond you (I will say that I have met a few people that can't work with their hands though)Originally posted by akkordlayinkit

to do the handles you need to pull the machanism, cut a plate to fit the hole you just made, weld it in place (being careful not to overheat one area) then just grind and bondo till the plate dissappears into the door.
Rain gutters would need to be sanded really rough then filled with long strips of fiberglass or welded strips of metal (the fiberglass is a ton easier to DIY, but the difference in material could lead to cracking over time as the fiberglass will react differently to changes in temp than the metal around it)
Idealy the gas cap would be done the same as the door handles, if i can remember right the gas cap isn't metal is it. but even if it is it's pretty thin and wouldnt be ideal for the replacement piece (not to mention, it's kind of small to make a good plug)
Shaving the antenna, emblems, and filling the bumper holes would be perfect first jobs.

I will say it again...its not a DIY project if you have no experience, and if hes asking for a DIY, then that says he knows nothing about the processes. I know from experience and have done or redone my handles probably 3-4 times, because my first times I thought this was a DIY project that I could do, well I did it, then a few months later--cracks. Since my early DIY bodywork days I have redone every earlier bodywork projects and now do custom/collision repair at a buddies shop. And all the time and money I spent on doing the bodywork wrong, was a huge waste, I should have either payed someone or got some hands on work before attempting bodywork.Originally posted by mysta2

that's awesome though, I mean you know how much you learned by doing it wrong , and now you work in a body shop. I suppose it's just my personality to jump in head first, I would personally much rather do it wrong and have to fix it than pay someone to do it right, you'd never learn anything that way, and I would consider every dime I paid them to do it money that I threw away.
Maybe I came off too harsh I suppose I'm not disagreeing with you, because I can certianly see your' point. It's just that for me, it's more about the journey than the destination.

dats how i feel i have shaved antennas, emblems, and filled in the holes to stock wings on other cars but one thing i have never done is shaved door handels or any thing as big i know you have to take out the shit that gose to the handel and make sure your key less entry system works right then welding in the metal plate (didnt know about the hot points) and then bonding it till its smooth i am just lookin for some step by step pics n tips on how to do it cuz some day soon i would like to do it. i know wat your guys mean by that its a pretty big task to do the 1st time but if i do it i am try to have some one dat knows a bit more then i do at least with me.Originally posted by mysta2

i started fixing and rebuliding computers 5 years ago when i was 12 and now i got my A+ certafication and the only way i learned was by messing up and spending 1000z on parts that now a dayz cost under 100z

But as far as everyone is concerned, yes I too agree that doing your own work a good learning experience, but my point was to get the experience hands-on from someone that does bodywork-before you actually start screwing up your car...then once you know some techniques and such, then go ahead and tackle your own car.
But either way good luck...
One day buddy, whenever I find the time...but I will write one up for you one day.Originally posted by 91accord4door
