Well this isn't exactly a full D.I.Y. coz it's somewhat of a prototype that was fueled by boredom. But here is my current project. The Fiberglass Flushmount!
I'll say this right now, Fiberglass is a bitch to work with! I gotta hand it to fliplyricist1 (custom chargespeed) and Dutch Accord (rear roofmount spoiler)
I looked at the marvelous projects and thought....hey why not? So this is my first attempt to duplicate the oem flushmount since sourcing a reliable fabricator at the moment is very hard...
As you can see, the waves from the rushed parts of Should've taken my time
Aside from the wavy areas,I'm still happy that I got it this accurate tho for a first attempt!
Spoiler is just hanging off the ledge, it fits better than it looks, I didn't actually tape it on or anything (another issue that needs to be addressed..screws or 3m tape? i'm thinking 3m tape)
You can see some more of the imperfections.
My 2nd attempt is going to look 2x better than this! I started late one night right after work and was working on this till 7AM in the morning and I got pretty tired and anxious to finish it b4 falling asleep. I took a look at the finished product in the morning and found out that some areas didn't mix well with the hardener and since this was outside in my backyard, I'm assuming the wind slightly pulled and caused ripples or waves and kept it from looking smooth the way I left it! Now I know the correct ratio of hardener and resin so it won't dry out as fast and I'm going to work with smaller pieces of fiber mat than use huge pieces at once which also aided towards the imperfections.... However, i'm pretty happy with how my first attempt came out and I know my 2nd try is going to look even better or near perfect!
This is only a project and I'm not sure if i'm going to mass produce these if I can get it perfected. I still want to try to find a professional that can make more at a time... as u can see how long it took me to create this one. I'll keep u guys posted!
