well just so you kno a black headliner will make the car seem extremely small and cramped. also most ppl will suggest that you dont paint it...

but you would prep the interior parts with the basic paint prep steps..clean, clean, fine sanding, clean, primer (use light coats 2x-4x), then the color you want (again light coats 2-4x or until you get your desired effect).

you might want to be prepared to not have that part in your car for a few days so you can do it right...i hear that Rustoleum and Krylon work pretty well...

Dont know about the headliner, but im sure someone could help ya out with that...and dont forget that PATIENCE is the key..and good luck

in the process of converting my blue interior to black.

i am taking pictures today of what is done.

the thing to use is. Duplicolor vinyl dye.

it CANNOT BE USED ON PLASTIC!!!! only vinyl and fabric.

if it is used on plastic it will just peel off in a sticky sheet of paint.

however, on vinyl and fabric, it soaks right in, feels like vinyl (not like paint) and is armorall safe. As i said, posting pics today, since i just finished the 4 doors

Man the Duplicolor vinyl dye doesnt work, its flaking after 6 months. I heard SEM vinyl paint is best. The guys at Unique Autosports use it(Unique Whips).

well, i dunno bout you, but mine never cracked or flaked away. its not a paint remember, its a dye. i usually let it go for about a week, then clean my interior (takes off any that wasnt absorbed) and its permanent.

here are the pics of my progress, with some comparison to original color... NOTE im not done yet, still figuring out how im gonna do the plastic pieces

duplicolor vinyl dye works great. i've used it on lots of things, including fabric, paper speakers, car interior parts (hard plastic-like parts), computer CD/DVD drives. on the right material, it soaks in (even if you spray too much), and will never come off. it only peels/flakes on plastics, because it doesn't soak in. there are even some things that you might think are plastic, that are in fact vinyl, and the dye works great on those things too. just test on parts that won't be seen, like tabs or even the backs of larger parts.

make sure you prep it properly, too. i suppose it could possibly not soak into/flake off even vinyl if the vinyl is not clean, or has oil/silicone-based cleaners or treatments on the surface. a good soap and water and/or 90% isopropyl cleanup should do the trick.

                        i use heavy duty degreasers

dad gets CRC degreaser free, so i use that to prep.

Wash it with soapy water first, then use VERY LITTLE CRC degreaser (it can eat through plastic/vinyl) and then soapy water again.

and you are right, i went a little heavy on some of the vinyl because the fabric takes more to dye, but it soaked it right in.

anything that doesnt soak in, can be washed away, leaving behind the dyed part, without a shitty look.

the best part is, it STILL FEELS LIKE VINYL!!! not like some shitty paint.

                        Armor all safe as well

just to re-iterate on a few of you guys points.

i dont recommend sanding any interior piece unless you plan on glassing over it. if you must paint use cleaner and then a good primer. also, you do not need 2x-4x coats of primer. unless you are trying to cover up sanding scratches.
also, Krylon Fusion = teh suck. krylon fusion will fisheye on most interior pieces due to the grain.
                            dye is always best
gutterslide and 93cb7sedan make some good points about proper prep. listen to them.

should you even use primer at all? since primer isnt made for vinyl, and the dye isnt made for primer... just curious, because 93cb7sedan's job looks great.
