How to check if a capacitor is working?

i have a 1 farad digital capacitor i wired it through positive and neg speaker wire i plan on using it as a backup battery for my alarm..i wired it it turned on and jumped to 12.2 and i watched as it died out at like 6 after i disconnected the positve and negative from the battery terminals...does this mean its good

With some capacitors, you have to charge them. An easy way of checking to see if they're charged is to hook it to a voltage meter. And I don't understand what you mean when you said you hooked it up with speaker wire?

i took 2 speaker wires 1 from the positive terminal to Positive on car battery
1 from negative to negative on car battery

turned on fine and read 12.5 and when it urned the car on went to 14.5

when i take it off the car battery it drops down and dies at 7 in about 2 minutes

Caps aren't batteries. It isn't designed for that purpose.

ok..i know that. but i got the cap for free and my cousin has a 1 farad cap that keeps his alarm running for about another 10 minutes after is battery is pulled..so im looking to do the same thing.

your silly man, why not go spend 15$ on a backup battery for your alarm capacitors arn't for that.

On a side note, all capacitors are virtually useless, unless you have an upgraded alternator and upgraded wiring ("the big three").

???? why would you want your alarm to only work for 10min past after you take your battery out. if someone was going to break in your car i'm pretty sure it would be well after 10 mins

i agree with some of the other comments, go get a battery back up for your alarm and be done with it. it sounds like your cap is doing what its suppose to.

not in boston but search ebay for a dei 520t, several on there for less than $15 shipped
your cap seams to be working like it should, it is not designed to be used as a battery.

lol, dude, caps dont store energy, im surprised it even last 2 minutes after disconnecting the battery. why your friends lasted longer is probably cause his cap had more farads, therefore stored more energy.

for the purpose you want, get another battery
