    alarm relay qustion

well my alarm came with a relay that was supposed to be used in a starter kill setup...is this a special kind of relay or can i use it for other things such as domelight supervision?

I is a heavy duty realy, but you can use it for other things as long as you wire it correctly.

hmmm...i thought i wired it correctly for my domelight supervision but when i lock the car the light goes on instead of when i unlock it...the circuit is normally closed instead of normally open, did i wire it wrong or is it a diff kind of relay?

You mean when you lock it with your car alarm right? If so then it is giving ground when the alarm locks as opossed to grounding when it is unlocked.

I hope this is what you mean, if not then a simple diagram may help as to what yo are trying to do.

the relay is normally closed and that is why the dome light is on when it is armed, but when i hit disarm the alarm sends the negative signal to the relay and the circuit is now open causing the domelight to turn off...so do i need a diff kind of relay?

ok let me try to understand this better. Does the alarm have a wire that is supossed to be for dome light supervision? If so what does it give out + or - when disarmed and for how long?

I guess you are wiring this to your realy right? Well the dome light wire is negative activated, and if you have it going to ground when arming the alarm then that is why it is reversed. It is supposed to go to negative when disarming.

But why are you using a relay? Or are you directly connecting power to the dome light?

okay...the alarm does have a wire for domelight supervision...i hadnt used it before this point and ive never hooked up a relay before this point...im not sure if it gives out a positive or negative chagre or for how long it does so...the alarm came with a relay that is normally closed and was supposed to be used for a starter disable setup but i thought "meh, a relay is a relay" and attempted to hook it up for my domelight supervision last night...

i hooked one wire up to the positive on the battery...then as i was instructed (since our domelights are -) i hooked another wire up to a ground...then i had two wires left so one got hooked up to the wire coming from the alarm brain and the other got hooked up to the domelight/doortrigger wire under the dash...

to my understanding, since it is a normally closed relay the domelight was staying on until i disarmed the car causing the alarm brain to send the signal to the relay (which was meant to actually close the relay) and opened the relay causing the domelight to go off

sorry if this is poorly worded, if it is i will reword

Oh here is a diagran I got from a site:

(let me know if you can't see the image)

So, are you using the default wiring harness that it comes with? If so it may be poorly plugged in for your application.

Can you point out how you have the relay wired in relation to the diagram, and also it would help if we knew what brand/model alarm you have. I am betting that you don't even need to use the relay since Honda's are negative activated.

yes i did use the harness that came with it, maybe that is why it isnt working right...

the install manual said to use a relay, i thought it might damage the alarm brain if i went directly from the brain to the domelights, if i dont have to use the relay then i wont i just dont want to screw up my alarm brain

                  i have an audiovox alarm

i wired the 86 to the positive battery
the 85 to the wire from the alarm brain
                  the 87a to a ground
                  the 30 to the domelight

this was different then what the diagram in my manual said but i didnt have a wire coming from the 87 terminal and i wasnt sure if i could remove the harness but if i can then i can probably fix the relay

On the harness you should be able to move Pin 87A to 87 and this should fix your problem. It should be fairly easy to move since it is just a clip. Look in it and you will see what I mean. This will make the relay a normally open that closes when the alram disarms. Correct?

alright ill try that thanks...so the wiring harness should just come off of the actual relay?

Yes, the relay should just come off the harness.
