Blew up a damn sub today

I was just bumping my tunes regularly, when out of the blue my bass cuts in half. WTF, said the cat. So I pop the trunk and there's a wisp of smoke...not a good sign. I get to the trunk and there's smoke coming from my port...tasty. I push on the right sub...nice and loose, cool. I push on the left, and it's tighter than the tightest air-tight box you could ever imagine. The VC is toast. My hands still smell like the smoke...this definitely sucks. Oh well...

I guess I gotta call up the shop or whatever but it sucks. I was just getting used to having a box again and this happens. I think my friend who gave the box to me blew a sub (on the same side) so I should have known better...but damn, this still sucks. Hopefully the shop will hook me up.

I have two Kicker CVR 12's and a Kole amp...I hope my amp's ok. I'm going to the shop tomorrow to see what they can do for me; I'm pretty sure they're certified Kicker dealers so they'll be able to replace my shizzle (via warranty...I kept the manual ).

I don't see how a wire crossing would do it; that would just throw my amp into safe mode. I guess all will be revealed tomorrow when I take the shizzle apart. To say the least this really sucks...looks like it's back to the 8"...

yeah, i wouldn't recommend putting subs in ported boxes...dont EVER do that unless they are designed with ported use in mind...my subs (older round S12D solobarics) are the same kind of overall sub, just beefier all around, and they arent meant to be used in ported boxes...at all...also, dont turn ur gain up past 2/3 or 3/4 of the way AT THE MAX!!! if you turn ur gain up, you will fry both your amps and your subs...not what you want..

and if you get your system stolen and you dont have insurance on it, all i can say is ur dumb...putting a rider on your insurance is really cheap for the security that you have...i have all of mine covered for less than $10 a month extra

yeah, my solobarics are "only" rated for 450w RMS, but they have only 320 oz magnets..hmm, funny how some companies REALLY over rate their stuff, i hate that...thas why i went with the best stuff, IMO, and that fit my budget

not dissin your stuff man, but 1800w is a hell of a lot of power...
are you running that on your stock alternator?

LOL @ my amp ever coming close to seeing 1800W coming out of it...I never push it that hard at all. In fact, when it blew, I must have had the volume at like 15 or so out of an alarm-disarming 40 on a song with no kind of deep bass at all. I switched to a bigger ported box and redid the ports closer to spec, so I guess that change lowered the resistance to a point that the coils were melting...it must have only been a matter of time.

I had a sealed box that made the Qts on my old Orions prob. .707 or close and those hit in a 1.0cf box HARD. I think this has re-established my faith in the sealed box setup.

theres many things that could have gone wrong

ported boxes don't lower the resisitance that is all in the wiring. haha

Also ported boxes make subs "looser" and the cone will move more. So if the bass that was coming out of the song was a fast paced bass the cone couldn't keep up thus heating up the VC. Then after being hot for a while the VC welds itself together. This is probably what happened. I have never and will never use a ported box.
"you can catch me swoopin 4G coupin switchin lanes" haha haha.
