Newer 5V or 8V head unit with older amp?

OK maybe this isn't really a concern, but are older amplifiers generally still compatible with the newer head units that feature higher output voltages?

I realize the amp still has an input level control; just wondering if it's likely to be within range if using a 5V or 8V -type of HU. Thanks.

You'll be okay. the deck wont put out a full 5v or 8v at volume 0. Say your amp is rated for only 2v. The amp will make maximum power once your headunit puts out 2v, regardless if you're only at volume 10 out of 30, or 25 out of 30. Any more than that, you'll start clipping the amp. Which isn't to say that's a bad thing because the amp is already making full power.

What you gain from higher preout voltage is lower floor noise and that you wont have to crank up the deck as much to acheive volume.
