is my amp blown or sub blown?

alright, i have a old school soundstream 1000sx amp. and i have a 10 inch diamond d3. now when the amp is on, it has the red led which is HIGH Power mode, i believe its a protection, is that normal? bc when i got the amp and we installed in my friends ride, it was green which auto high current mode.

im using only 1 sub which is a dual voice coil. i dont see anything burnt in the amp, the sub dosent get loud like it supposed to. the fuses are good. connections are good. everything plugged up is alright. im just hoping its the sub not the amp.

When my sub burnt out it didn't make any noise. Try turning it off or disconnecting it before you turn on the system. If it's done you'll normally lose functioning in any other speakers hooked up to it. Unless it's a seperately driven setup.

with the protect light on it could b a bad ground. if ur sub was blown u would know it and ur amp turns on but just dont push the sub the way u feel it should did u set up freq and gain properly oh and also check ur rca cable if 1 side is bad ur sub wont bump fully wow it could b so many little dumb things but start with the above this is where i have seen most probs come from and good luck

Make sure your subwoofer is correctly impedance-matched to the amplifier. What is the amp rated to for resistance? What is the resistance rating of each voice coil of the sub? How do you have it wired? Series or parallel?

the sub is blown. for sure
this happened to me once with an xtant 15 dvc, and an old school memphis amp. everything was hucked up right, but as soon as the sub was hooked up, the light went red, and no sound.

its the sub. try hucking up another sub to see for sure.

Yelp I think I blew up the wire, I am going to have my friend look over it because he is big into audio.

Judging by experience, it's probably the Soundstream. I've been throught quite a few old school Soundstreams. They were terrible.

Hook the sub up to your home stereo to know.

Judging by experience, test both the amplifier and subwoofer before running out and buying new equipment. Check the wiring and make sure the driver and amplifier are correctly impedance-matched. Hook the subwoofer to a known good amplifier to see if it is actually blown, then do the same for the amplifier with a known good woofer. If and when you know for sure something is blown, then replace it.

if the amp is wired wrong and is not set properly (settings on the amp), can this be the issue?

Let's say you have an amp that's rated down to a 4ohm load. You have a DVC woofer that has dual 4ohm voice coils. If you wire the voice coils in series, the amp will be seeing an effective 8ohm load and will put out much less power than if you were running a 4ohm woofer. If you wire the voice coils in parallel, the amp will see a 2ohm effective load and very likely activate the protection circuit to prevent damage to the amplifier. I would recommend getting in touch with someone familiar with car audio wiring and have them check the impedance match between your woofer and amplifier. (I don't know the specs of either so it's tough to help you with that part.) They can also test the woofer with a known good amplifier and test the amplifier with a known good woofer. (I'm a long way from NorCal, so again, it's tough to help.) Since you're saying the sub doesn't get loud like it's supposed to (I'm assuming it's still playing, just not as loud as you expected) my guess is that it's either wired incorrectly or just not a good match for the amplifier.
