Please DO NOT Post In The General Section

From this point on until otherwise briefed, posting in the general section of Performance Tech is prohibited. The only thing to remain here will be the stickies. We would just delete this section, but that would cause unintended results.

The majority of the threads created can appropriately be placed in one of the Performance Tech sub-forums or Technical; and the posting of them here is detrimental to the activity of said forums. If you have any questions about where you need to place your thread PM me or one of the other mods.

For the most part you all have caught on without this post, but there have been a few habitual offenders that forced me to say this.

Everyone will get a couple of warnings from here on out, after that I just start deleting threads.

Again if you have any questions, PM me or one of the other mods.

Aem Bypass Valve How Stuff Works???

OK i have read how the bypass valve works........it detects when the pressure drops from the filter being submerged in water...and then routes the air intake through the sides.............i just cant picture in my head how this works...maybe i need to get some sleep..but i am wondering how this process happens.
I live in florida and think it would be smart to invest in one but i want to understand how it opens up the sides.....heheh sorry so dumb

okay easiest way i can describe this is with a straw.

if you take a straw and suck air thoough it it comes from the farthest end.

take the same straw and make holes closer to your self and the air will come from both the holes and the other end of the straw.

now, if you submerge this straw in water but leave the holes in open air, you wont be sucking in much water...it will be more air becuase it takes away the pressure from the intake tube that would cause the water to travel through the tubing up to your TB and then fux0r your motor.

thats the simplest way i can describe that..

Good analogy. I have heard that they don't always work, I don't know. I had one on mine until I chose to go SR because my butt dyno showed an improvement.

          always sucking

thanks for the explanation..............so the bypass valve is always sucking air ????

            BUMP

The Bypass valve is always sucking in air, but if the filter is sumerged then MORE air is pulled through?

                JESUS!

I'm wanting to know just one simple thing about these bypass valves and I can not get one educated intelligent response out of someone?! COME FUCKING ON GOD DAMN IT this is not ricerboard.com.fucknuts we are supposed to be better and more interested in performance and quality and DAMNIT why doesnt anyone feel the need to chime in here?

I'm frustrated because I would like to know if anyone has any real experiance with the AEM bypass valves for the CAI - by experiance I mean has anyone actually used one? Have you had problems with it. Has it worked. Have you submerged it and it saved ur ass? Have you hear it sucks? WHY does it suck? \

I've got a real question and its just shocking that no body has bothered to make a real responce to the issue yet. " I heard they suck" tells me nothing. WHY would it not work? What about it does/does not work?

I've been told on the sr20 forum that someone actualyl sucked one into the intake. Anyone else have this problem?

I apologize for being frustrated if I said something to offend anyone. This is how I feel and those are my thoughts on it right now. Now I am out. Thank you.

okay.. sorry im the only one who cares man.

but yes while the bypass filter is on it does douck a small amount of air constantly not enough to TRULY affect the performence of sourcing air from out side of the engine ammbient temperature location but it is still sourcing air. again the amount is very limited as the true filter has a free-er flowing source of air.

i have no personal experience of hearing the bypas filter saving the motor or sucking water but using basic physics it should save your motor. i know there are tales out there in forum land where the bypass hasnt saved the motor from being hydro locked, but there are stories out there about everything..

your safest bet as always will be to run a SR but some just like to run the gamble. for my h22 build i plan on purchasing a CAI and using that only when nesc. and using the SR i have now during daily driving needs. i mean come one its an intake.. less than 5 minutes to get that thing in and out.

if you dont believe me than go and see someones car that has a bypass filter on their CAI if you place your hand on the bypass you can feel that there is a slight movement of air, but its minimal. the bypass filter is not a performence modification, it is a preventative for using an intake that is at higher risk of causing damage to your engine (but arent almost all performence mods to some degree)...

hope this helps you man and im sorry again that no one else wanted to chime in. id like to hear what someone else thinks.

Thanks for the responce I really do appreciate it clarkster.
I've been reading about the CAI vs. SR vs. Stock box debate. It seams that stock box with a piece of intake piping 'suposedly' produces the most power on the dyno. That would mean a bypass would not really be needed.
However, I'm not so sure about the stock box giving the most power. The argument for it is that the plastic material has a lower heat sink than the metal intake pipings.
                      Two observations -
                      1. No one likes the cones with open ends. They produce turbulence. The stock piping is ribbed (not a great description, but kinda) this creates turbulence right?
Okay so the smoother metal intake piping probably flows better.
                      2. Would it not work to simply wrap the intake with something to keep heat out? Would header wrapping work?

I'm def. Going to go with a bypass valve. And to explain my attitude earlier all I can say was I got frustrated because I just really felt tired of reading all of the ignorant posts that are all prefrence and not facts. Liking a DropZone drop may be great, but it wont tell anything to someone looking for an autox drop! lol So again I apologize. I'm just out here like everyone trying to learn everything I can.

alright now the stock piping vs smooth aftermarket intake piping is a whole differnt story, from my own readings which most are un founded opinons is that the "ribbed" piping does not affect the over all performence because the air is moving at such a speed. IDK i dont see how the air could be moving that fast but i take it at face value. now IMO i think its trapping air in the ribs and the air that is unobstructed moves along past these pockets of trapped air causing a sort of constant stream of air.

as far as the stock air box theory im not sure, i belive that plastic disapates heat slower than metal but again without actual testing i cant be sure.

now for the stock piping to not need an intake this is because there is a sealed box from which the intake draws air that has air channeled through a small opening. now there is still a chance for water to get in this system it is less likey than with an open filter and no box.

and for your last question.. haha sorry in a good mood tonight.

to wrap rubber with a heat wrap would trap more heat in because i believe rubber disapates heat slower (but it may have a slower heat transfer rate all the way around) i believe older styled iceman CAIs are heat wrapped but im not sure what material the actual tubing is made out of (might ask scott aka 2point6 since hes having one made for the cb7s.. shameless plug).

hope this helps you out.. and again i want to hear what others have to say since im a "weekend tuner" and ive learned most of knowledge from others and reading..
