    Cheap turbo

i want to turbocharge my 2.2 but i lack the funds to get a nice new one, anyone have ideas on which other cars i could find in a junkyard with turbos that i could make work or is this even possible.

Be easy on the boost. Since funds are really tight, I assume you won't have the money to build the bottom and top ends to handle big boost. Off the top of my head, I'd say 6 p.s.i. is about the highest you can run safely on a daily driver, without build-up. Post up how much R33 wants for his turbo set-up if you do contact him. I'm curious too. Thanks.

No offense, but with that type of question, you need to do a whole lot of searching and research before you even begin purchasing parts. You can expect to pay 800 to 1,000 (if not more) for a properly built, DIY setup. Also, there is a whole lot more involved in terms of tuning when you purchase R33's kit, which by they way is currently unavailable. So if you want one now, you will have to put it together yourself.

          boost

i was looking to spend around 1500 to 2000, but cant go all out and get like a 6k one, should i save up and build up the bottom end first, shave the heads and put some sweet pistons in or can i just put on a smaller turbo or is that too risky anyway. my engine only has 10k on it but the body has 300k lol. Am i even gonna notice a real diffrence with only 6 psi? i had a 90 probe gt with a turbo and it put out 12 psi and it was fast as hell. Sorry bout all the questions but i havent seen many people turbo a cb7.

serch in here about turbo components... get a list of a complete turbo kit. everything that u need. then go shoping.
sometimes there are people in here that turbo parts etc.(dsm)
then u go to dsm websites and by what u need......

With research (which is smart regardless) and careful shopping, you can build a budget turbo system for VERY little money. I'm doing this myself. This has been covered at length on the board here already (searching will give you LOTS of info) but I'll run down the list quickly. Someone let me know if I miss anything important!

You can use an exhaust manifold from a turbo DSM (Eclipse, Talon, Laser... 2nd gen is supposedly the best). You can also use their turbos, though they are fairly small... I'm using a t25 (DSM) turbo myself, but I know it isn't best for the engine. A smaller T3/T4 hybrid is your best bet, but a bit more expensive. You can also use the DSM injectors (rated at 450cc). To use those injectors, and correct your fuel curve for turbo, you can get a P06 ECU from a Civic and have it chipped (Midnite Racer X, Accord R33, and BustedLX all do wonderful work for reasonable prices). You'll need a custom downpipe, which you can get at a muffler shop (best to find a shop that can do mandrel bends, but if you want cheap, crush bends will work). You'll need oil lines (stealthmodeperformance.com for me). You can run a stock DSM side mount intercooler, or go the more expensive (but better) route of a front mount. I'm using a Starion front mount. Intercooler piping can be found onlne... a cold air intake works well for the pipe leading to the throttle body. I know I'm missing a few things, but that's a lot of the expensive stuff...

I'm looking at about $600 for the whole setup, and that's with very careful shopping (and great deals from some of my fellow CB7ers!) I know that my clutch won't last long, and I'm not planning on this motor staying in great condition... I'm doing it to a fairly cheap project CB7 that I picked up, so if it blows, it blows! If this is your only car, then going the cheap route isn't a good idea. Simply adding a turbo to the car will introduce plenty of potential problems, and doing it with junkyard parts will make those problems more probable!

Now, to do it RIGHT is a different story. My setup might get me 200hp to the wheels, and it might blow my motor as well! Midnite Racer X is using a better turbo, and much better tuning than I plan on using (I don't have any dyno plans)... he's making about 250. 250-300hp is probably the limit for stock internals.
If you want to build the motor, I would suggest getting a DOHC motor over your SOHC (unless you have a particular loyalty to the F22A). The F22B DOHC is a very good candidate for turbo, and gives you a little more tunability... not to mention a bit more stock horsepower and guaranteed lower mileage! Many people have great luck with the single cam motor, but personally, if I was going to spend the money on internals, I would do it to a dual cam motor.

why would you spend 800-2k for a DIY kit? You can piece them together for around 450-500 if you look enough. Don't settle though.

Eh, depending on what you do...

Jer, you KNOW what kind of deals I've been getting (like that intercooler for that great price... who sold me that again? )

Here are my prices so far, just to give you an idea of the bare minimum.

                  Turbo/o2 housing - $65 shipped
Injectors - $65 shipped (you CAN get a better deal, but I'm comfortable with the source of these)
                  Intercooler - $65 shipped
Charge piping, custom downpipe, DSM BOV - $220 shipped
Oil lines - About $65 shipped (thanks to R33... if he still has half of what I need!)
DSM Manifold - I traded parts for mine (well, still waiting to) but they normally go for $45 or so on average. Mine was brand new
ECU is $125 from those I mentioned, I think... or more... I still need to get mine! If you know how to modify the ECU, you can probably just get the parts from those people for less.
I feel like I'm forgetting something... ah well...

                  So, that's $505 for me.

For 2k you can get a real great diy turbo kit.

Here is my DIY kit on my civic:
dsm manifold, O2 housing, Turbo, and Wastegate: 210
ebay HKS knockoff bov:130 (really loud and does not leak)
SS mandrel bent charge pipes: 70
                      FMIC: 150
ECU from MRX:trading him a ecu
Gauge set: Boost, A/F and Oil pressure:100
                      Stealthmode oil line kit: 90

                      Total with optional equipment: 720!!!

I am already collecting some other upgrades:
                      Crower valvetrain and cams: 700
                      SKunk 2 camgears: 200
Forged pistons and H beam rods: 800-1g.

Any turbo you desire can work. Problem is which turbo requires less modifications and labor to get into the bay. Like lets take my example, i was trying to put a supra stock turbo on the f22b. Problem was that it was incredibly hard to find someone who made flanges for that turbo for a good price. I may still do it but it won't be an easy task due to how rare this mod is.
