Please DO NOT Post In The General Section

From this point on until otherwise briefed, posting in the general section of Performance Tech is prohibited. The only thing to remain here will be the stickies. We would just delete this section, but that would cause unintended results.

The majority of the threads created can appropriately be placed in one of the Performance Tech sub-forums or Technical; and the posting of them here is detrimental to the activity of said forums. If you have any questions about where you need to place your thread PM me or one of the other mods.

For the most part you all have caught on without this post, but there have been a few habitual offenders that forced me to say this.

Everyone will get a couple of warnings from here on out, after that I just start deleting threads.

Again if you have any questions, PM me or one of the other mods.

Are the high flow "race" catalytic converters any good? Also are they smog legal? What kind of horsepower gains can i expect?

some people dont want to because then they have to buy a new cat for inspection,so its better to buy an aftermarket cat(high flow).that way you can keep your stock cat for emmissions.so that secrets kinda ***.imo.

the only true high flow cat available is from random technology. these are smog legal and are available in a range of sizes..plus they bolt right on to your existing exhaust and header, no welding required. ebay 'race' cats...straight pipes, thats all.

Actually, I have a HI-FLO carsound cat, which is a sub-division of the ever popular Magnaflow. The cat itself is better construction than the OEM one, and sounds much better. Also, it produces on average 5% gains on your overall total HP. They have dyno's to back it up, on top of that TURBO did an article on them, backing up the quality and the gains as well. Random Tech Cats, are not worth the $200.00 IMO.

The ebay cats, or the "hi flo", as ebay calls them are like someone said before, just a straight pipe. There is nothing in it @ all. They are not legal, and might get you in more trouble than the gained HP is worth.

It's your choice though, but myself and many others use Car Sound cats. They are worth the money I believe.

              Good Luck.

The only brand of high-flow I've had experience with is random Technology. Its hard for me to say exactly how much power I gained from just the cats because I installed the high-flow cats along with the whole exhaust system. However, DO NOT just gut, or remove your old one. If you have emissions testing in your area you WILL NOT pass by a long shot! Also, extremely large fines if you get caught, $2,500 per cat here in Texas.

Got a question about the gutted cats...Do you lose any backpressure that way? It would seem to me that would cost you some low end torque.

Yes, you will lose backpressure as well as low-end torque. Just stick with OEM or a high-flow.

The backpressure myth needs to fucking die.

Do a search, we've been over this. It's all about flow velocity.

yeahthat backpressure thing is b/s. but what happens when you gut the cat is you interupt the velocity flow of the exhaust gases. sportcompactcar did a good article on this. I believe you can still view it on line.

he he he....well....don't get caught. And about the backpressure thing, I'm telling you from personal experience, you WILL lose torque without a cat.
