Need some advice, Maybe messed something up?

So I am playing with the car today as I always do. Took off My short ram and stuck the filter right to the Tb (I wanted to hear the difference) Now when I did that I noticed From under the valve cover area a kind of clinking sound, almost like something is floating around in there (but I know there isnt). Could it be my valvetrain is going to shit?
    (130,000 Miles)

I put everything back together normally and I dont have that noise anymore so I dont know what it could have been. Maybe I floated a valve or something?
    Any thoughts?

How'd you fit the filter? Bahhh damn EX's, I think some of my ABS gear gets in the way...

That was a bad idea putting an air filter right on the TB.
          You risk detonation.
The sound from a, "ultra-short" ram intake like your setup is amazing, LOUD and obnoxious actually...i did this on my old Civic dx coupe, d16y8 that has the Throttle plate opening upwards...after 1 day, i said no more. Albeit the the temp was in the 30'sC, it still was a bad move.

If something was floating around in your head, either it would be chewed up and deposited in your oil pan(all shredded) or still boucing around being stuck in valve springs or what not...

Listen more carefully now: maybe you need a valve lash/valve adjustment

How is this prone to detonation?

Just to follow up I removed the filter from the tb direct. I went with the oem snorkel and my hks smf.

I dont know why people bitch about it...its an awesome filter. There are people on here running itb's (or planning on it) with no filters so really whats worse?

I would like an apexi though since i heard they are better.

What he said never witnessed this before. Do explain. As for the clinking sound you make sure everything was tight and look around while revving your engine to seee if it was hitting anything?

Short ram air, meaning an air filter right on the TB means gushing HOT air into the intake manifold increases extra heat for the combustion proccess, thus an engine which overheats is prone to detonation. A natural engine produces a lot of heat, all the moving parts, exhaust manifold, Manifold pressure...this hot air is being sucked in without an intake pipe or snorkel --well put DJSpeedy

It also changes A/F. Over time your ECU will learn that more air is being accepted, which will adjust fuel injection. This is where people say and claim ram air increases high end power, b/c there isnt restriction as in a typical cold air intake setup.

When you read that people say their motor is, "pinging" or "knocking," that is the unburnt portion of fuel.

If an ultra short ram air intake was a good idea, wouldn't one think to see that type of setup on every car made with fuel injection?

Cold air, or cooler air for teh win.

Edit:Think why people use large intercoolers for their turbo cars. Intercooler cools the air then through the charge pipes to the intake manifold for a crisp, "burn." On hot days, or hot climates, an intercooler is a must.

In theory this makes sense except for one problem...the filter being right on the tb is not going to get any more hot air than if the car in question is using a short ram setup. The major benefit is CAI, since thats were you can get a colder air charge that will remain cold. i like the stock snorkel though since I noticed that it doesnt retain heat as much as an aluminium pipe under the hood does, hence defeating the purpose of having the short air or cold air intake in the first place.

I'm in agreement with this man...air filter by the TB = short ram without the tube; if anything it might be a little better since it's further away from the header and radiator, and of course while the losses over the intake pipe are minimal they are real...

However ultimately the CAI is the best setup. You have to understand how much air an engine ingests and see how quickly it moves through an intake pipe; the effects of engine heat are minimal. It's time to do a little math.

Let's say your motor is running at 3KRPM. That means every minute, your motor will have ingested 2.2 liters of air 1,500 times (since every other revolution is the power/exhaust stroke). In a second it will ingest that volume 25 times. Through the area of the intake, which is approximately 60mm or 6cm, that means the air has an average flowrate of 28,200cc/sec, which makes the average speed of the air 28,200cc/6cm^2= 4700cm/sec, or 47m/s, which is like 80MPH. You figure the intake is about a meter long...10 milliseconds is like a finger snap, there's no way the air could soak up a significant amount of heat in the engine bay moving at that speed.

I dunno what that had to do with anything in this thread other than to disprove the theory that CAI's heat up air in the engine bay. I'm buying one. But running a filter right on the TB isn't any worse than running a short ram.

Back to the original question, I would suggest taking the valve cover off and checking the valve clearance (and check if anything is actually floating around in there, but I doubt it). First thing should be a valve adjustment since it's essentially free (assuming you own spacers).

omg, Accord13&BA4 is the only person that REALLY believes that short rams hurt your engine.

I mean shit, what do you have to say about ITB setups? that theyre bad? ROFL.

anyways, it sounds like some valve adjustment issue.
