    mandral bent vs crimp bent

Ok, my stock exhaust completely rusted off a while back and I went to meinike and they crimp bent the exhaust pipe to fit the car.

First question is how much of a difference is there between mandral and crimp bent eshaust as far as power goes?

Second question is would it be possible to weld in mandral bent corners with a mig welder?

    thanks for any help

well, the whole purpose of mandrel bent is to have that smooth path for the air to travel, reducing/eliminating turbulent flow. seeing that meineke has already crimped it, even if you were to cut and weld a new mandrel section, the weld would be impossible to smooth down on the inside of the piping. it may look smoother on the outside, but internally, you may even make it worse.

Ok, is there any place that I can find a mandral bent piping for my cb7. I'd like a completely new exhaust kit, but I can't afford it so I'll have to settle for new piping. I can't afford anywhere near as many add ons as what I first expected and so I'm gonna need every bit of horsepower that I can get.

you'll be hard pressed to find a shop that'll do custom mandrel bent tubing... i'd suggest getting hold of a guy with username kteller (something close to that) on honda-tech... he has a website although i don't have the addy off hand, he's got a good reputation, and he'll build the exhaust with 0,1,2 resonators and all the flanges pre-welded.

and by the time you've finished replacing meineke exhausts over and over from rusting out, the extra cost of quality mandrel bent s.s. will be worth it

I've heard custom exhausts are cheaper by like $200 at least in Jersey according to Deevergote. He has one on his 92 Accord LX/H22 hybrid. Partswise, his cost just over $200 I believe, then he had it installed which cost a total of like $450 I recall. Mandrel bent too...pretty sure.

Yeah, IMO S.S. exhaust are for bragging rights. Sure, they'll last forever, but as long as the car doesn't sit for any length of time, aluminized steel exhaust will last from 8-10 years on average where I live. In 8-10 years, if I'm still driving my wife's cb7 then I'm gonna be regretting a hell of a lot more than not shelling out the extra money for stainless steel.

In no way am I saying that the CB7 doesn't kick ass, it's just that I prefer manual transmission, she prefers automatic. I prefer a lowered ride, she prefers stock.

Since I'm the kinda guy who goes for most bang for the buck. I'll probably end up getting a Dodge Neon SRT-4, they kick ass, again IMO.

I supposedly got a good deal... Sometimes I wonder though. The muffler is a stainless generic dual-tip. The piping isn't stainless (I was told that would be incredibly expensive) and I think it's mandrel bent. It's not a smooth bend, but it doesn't change significantly in diameter around the bends, if that makes any sense. The bends have small wrinkles in em, but they're not all-out crush bends.

The only problem I have with my custom/generic setup is that I get a buzzing/rattling sound whenever I push it. It seems that something is vibrating when it shouldn't, but I can't find the cause of it.

Everyone who heard it said it's probably a loose hanger or something... I guess if what you say is the case, then it's something I'm gonna have to live with until I can afford a real muffler, eh?
