I just switched to e85 from VP c14. I lost power. This was in a N/A application. I am skeptical of the quality of the e85 however. I haven't yet confirmed the blend of the fuel, but on the pump it said it can be as low as 70% ethanol. That means it could be thinned out with regular 87 octane to make a mix of e70. If so, then that would explain my loss which was about 20 whp.
Bisi was the person who suggested my change to e85 from c14. In his experimentation he found that e85 would make more power than the c14. In my case we were hoping for about a 15 whp increase just by switching alone.
I am going to retune on c14 then I will try the q16. This should happen next week.

The only downside to E85 is that it is incosistent from pump to pump. It's not always the same mix, especially when the weather changes. It sucks and really fucks with your tune. Some stations have winter mixes, summer mixes and 2 different stations can have 2 completely differnet mixes even though its the same season.

thats very true. I only buy my e85 from the same station that doesnt change their blend between seasons.

Yes... of course.Originally posted by turbo90accord View PostDid you retune for the e85? timing increases?

Most local turbo guys seem to like e85 regardless of the blend, but they do say that quality varies. I have no feedback from any local NA racer... I am not sure what "quality" I got, but next week I will have the re-tune done on c14. even though e85 is much cheaper, I would rather not have to worry about quality changes.

Exactly. You'd have to have retune pretty much every time you refilled.Originally posted by 2point6 View PostYes... of course.

yea we did alot of research on suppliers for e85 here in denver and found a gas station that had the same supplier that the race track uses for race fuels. we called them and they confirmed they only sell one blend year round. so we kinda lucked out but was a pain to get the contact info.

Q16 all the way, it's some amazing fuel.
E85 is too finicky as far as tuning goes, plus it's really hard to find sometimes, a lot of the stations here in Vegas have taken it out because they couldn't sell it.

We buy the majority of our e85 at the track in 55 gallon barrel drums pitched in by out crew so we know it's good stuff and has been tested for consistency by the track.

E85 is pretty popular up here in the Northwest although its still a lil scarce. Before tuning my car last year I was a lil torn. There are pro's n con's to both.
Q16's main con is the damn price. It's baddass but pretty pricey. I was paying around 13-15bucks a gallon last season.
E85 works well. you do need about 30% more fuel then regular gas. So it will need larger injectors and a good fuel system. And the inconsistancy of e85 is a major conern. Another thing too is most stations run different mixtures depending on the season as well. so if you daily drive on it. be careful.
My decision came down to pretty the fact that I had invested alot of money into my motor n turbo setup and i wasn't gonna skimp out on fuel. So I went with Q16 and don't regret it one bit.

Dont forget the face that you need way more E85 flowing in there than you would Q16
I would vote for Q16 - you can still get by with 1000cc's and its probably more constiently controlled when sold.
If your build is a track car - then Q16 isnt a bad choice. If its more daily'd and you need gas available all the time, then E85 would be ur pick.
