Please DO NOT Post In The General Section

From this point on until otherwise briefed, posting in the general section of Performance Tech is prohibited. The only thing to remain here will be the stickies. We would just delete this section, but that would cause unintended results.

The majority of the threads created can appropriately be placed in one of the Performance Tech sub-forums or Technical; and the posting of them here is detrimental to the activity of said forums. If you have any questions about where you need to place your thread PM me or one of the other mods.

For the most part you all have caught on without this post, but there have been a few habitual offenders that forced me to say this.

Everyone will get a couple of warnings from here on out, after that I just start deleting threads.

Again if you have any questions, PM me or one of the other mods.

    Who is using Coated pistons?

Is coating pistons really necessary? I'm thinking about getting some 9:0:1 JE pistons however after researching on the net, I've noticed some but not all people coat their pistons thru companies like Swain etc.

Supposedly they reduce "hot spots" but generally what I'm asking is, when will coating pistons be really necessary for a under 20PSI boost?

Do Subie, dsm oem turbo pistons come coated from factory? or is this just extra extra extra insurance when massive amounts of boost is in the future example 30+

Me and my friend have a GSR boost project going on his DC2 and we are throwing on a mild Greddy Turbokit for now with a custom sidewinder turbo manifold. The bottom end is going to be built with JE pistons but I just wanted to see how many people actually go thru coating pistons rather than dropping them the way they are. The projects goal is around 350-400HP and not dynoqueen non-daily driver friendly #s.

nice to have the coating but certainly not required.

I have the bisimoto pistons that were coated. Bisi says 5% increase in power because of better heat control. I like them coated because it helps prevent detonation and it also keeps piston temperature down and maximizing efficiency by not leaching heat away that the turbo will need.

going to have to agree. i went through calico coatings and got the tops and the skirts coated. tops help with the heat control and skirts act as a dry lubricant and helps with the expansion of forged pistons against cylinder wall if clearences weren't made to suit

I just finished assembling my new short block with Calico coated Wiseco pistons (ceramic tops and teflon skirts) as well as Calico coated bearings. I've heard nothing but good things, we'll see once the engine is running.

Good Question. Another question to add to OP question: Do these coatings wear? Would there be some type of gain from coating oem pistons and such?

the coating actually bonds into the metal so wear should not be an issue. I am sure that just like anything else there is a life cycle for it. Yes, it will help with stock pistons but it is a luxury item that is not often needed.

Teflon skirts are an awesome idea, if you have the option to get pistons with Teflon coated skirts for not much extra definitely do it.
