    h22 vs. h23 for boost

Ok well my plan is to swap in a auto h22 and then after about a year or so boost it. The reason I plan on going h22 is because I want to have a lot of hp before boosting and I'm not even 100% if I'm going to end up boosting. The h23 has only 160hp and in a wagon I doubt i'll be able 2 feel the difference when I swap. Do you guys think I should swap a h22 or h23 for boost? Why does the h23 handle boost better than the h22? With a good tune will the h22 be as reliable as the h23?

if you're really considering boost ,i'd strongly suggest you do a 5spd swap first.
both H22 and H23 have their own potential, it depends on how much power you want and how far your budget can go.

I thought about the 5speed swap but honestly , 5speed gets annoying at times. I can't talk on the phone or anything while driving. There are only a few people doing boosted auto's and I like to have my car be a little different. I'm getting a lsd tranny with a tranny cooler to keep it more reliable. I read around here that boosted auto motors always stay in boost, no turbo lag, is this true?

        no it's not true,

you can boost the auto but it won't last you long unless you do something to that tranny

          H23 vs H22 for boost.

Lets start with the auto Tranny. LSD is a must have in a front wheel drive car.

You would have much better power bands if you were to use a lx or dx transmission with super long gearing.. if boosted.

My accord auto tranny shifted out of 1st at around 45 2nd around 89mph and 3rd around 123mph.

A good synthetic transminsion fluid such as royal purple or redline is a must, as well as a large tranny cooler,, the more fluid it can hold the cooler and longer your transmission will last.

if you really want to go a lil deeper,, Level 10 Performace makes Stall converters for the tranny instead of just a oem torque converter.

This would allow you to brake boost getting your full boost on launch with no turbo lag.

I reomend you stay auto with the boost because you will love it!

          As for the H23vs H22

Even if you decide you don't want boost, the H23 will have more torque at a lower RPM making the wagon actually feel faster than if it had a high revving h22.

The shorter Rod and longer stroke combo creates this effect. Not to mention longer stroked motors with boost make for a verry torquey fun vehicle which is what an automatic will need to stay in competition with a similar setup on a 5 spd.

If you decide boost isn't for you the H23 can have a few upgrades to make it's power the same as an H22, except you will still have more torque.
With the money you would save from not buying the p13 ecu for the H22 or any other chiped one, and all the other things like the Vtec parts, and the motor it'sself,, you could easily upgrade the H23 to a much higher output powerplant.

Just remember that if you are going to go boost,, don't buy NA cams, as it will be a waste of money if you are untrained in adjusting them.

With the H23 you can also use DSM turbo parts to lower your future cost, as well as interchange lots of things with any f22 motor you may have. you also wouldn't have to worry about doing a manula tensioner conversion as the H23 already has it. it also has the lower compression if you decide not to tear into the motor, more ideal for boost.

As lower compression will be a safe gaurd againt detonation at a mild level of boost.

I know alot of people who have boosted H22's and to get the most power, they actually delete the Vtec from engaging as they are able to make more safe power that way... i am sure others have overcome that but it's something to think about.

the only down side.. is i would recomend upgrading the H23/f22 rods, as they aren't the strongest,, and for further reliability,, as with any turbo powerplant, I'd recomend for the H23 to get some Mahle Gold series forged 8:1 or 9:1 compression pistons.
the gold series have a coating that alow them to be used in the frm sleeves without damage.

other than that don't let anyone scare you about your tranny if you take those few easy steps it will be fine.

Not to be rude or anything like that but the first thing you need to invest in is a Blue tooth headset, you are aware of the fact that you can't multitask, by what you said, so protect yourself and others by using a a safe means to communicate or don't talk and drive.

damn the h23 sounds like it has alot of potential. are these motors rare? because i cant find them on hmotorsonline.com or any other popular motor website. where is a good place to get one?

i didnt mean it like that. i dont stay hours and hours on the phone while im driving. but even if i pik up to say "im gonna call u back", changine gears is an inconvenience. i remember my x would hate my car because i wouldnt be able 2 hold her hand, or id hold her hand as switch gears with my left hand thats more dangerous . 5 speed is great if your gonna be racing the car, but i want to have a lot of hp yet still keep it as my daily driver and thatll be with the convenience of having it automatic.

foamypirate : ma bad, im online on my fone so i mustve missed it lol

if you have to do this, your doing it wrong.

I have never heard of this a day in my life.

there is a way to overcome it, its called ECU tuning.

                      let me break this down.

I know alot of people who have boosted H22's..... I did not say myself had... and to get the most power, they actually delete the Vtec from engaging as they are able to make more safe power that way... this actually would pertain to people and builds like yours...

I can only go by what i have seen first hand,, and in no manner did i say it was right or wrong in my post. Just like Neither boosting H23 or H22 is right or wrong, it all comes down to personal prefference and personal experiences.

I am familiar with tuning boosted 4g63t motors not vtec motors.. and honestly It doesn't bother me to never have to tune a vtec motor,, i don't really have the desire to even learn it, because it would be useless to me in all manners...
But others as yourself have and want to either learn or pay someone to and their is nothing wrong with that.

I've never even heard of people turning off vtec when boosted(and I know the some of the 2 most power street H setups around here locally), that's just completely retarded. They must be some of the most incompetent tuners ever. You should stop hanging around them, they might pass the stupid on to you.

ok so ive decided to just get the h23. should i still use the dsm turbo setup i was planning to use on my old coupe (f22a6) ? i was planning on using the 16g EvoIII turbo .

im pretty sure that the tranny i have now is the f22b1 tranny. will this be a good tranny for boost? or should i get a f22 tranny and add the lsd to that ?
