Please DO NOT Post In The General Section

From this point on until otherwise briefed, posting in the general section of Performance Tech is prohibited. The only thing to remain here will be the stickies. We would just delete this section, but that would cause unintended results.

The majority of the threads created can appropriately be placed in one of the Performance Tech sub-forums or Technical; and the posting of them here is detrimental to the activity of said forums. If you have any questions about where you need to place your thread PM me or one of the other mods.

For the most part you all have caught on without this post, but there have been a few habitual offenders that forced me to say this.

Everyone will get a couple of warnings from here on out, after that I just start deleting threads.

    Internal v. External

Hey my boosted buddies. i'm almost done with the planning and mapping phase and is about to start the purchasing phase. but before i finish my gorcery list i was wondering if someone could tell me the advantages/disadvantages of internal vs external wastegates??

With a external wastegate you can run more boost safely since it's not part of the Turbo itself. You have lots of different brands and sizing options 38mm+ etc. and you can run different springs to regulate the exhaust gasses.

With a internal wastegate, once you go past the sufficiency of the turbo itself, the internal wastegate built onto the turbo more likely won't be able to handle the increased exhaust gasses pressure depending on how much boost and power you will be making. This is where the external wastegate comes in.

If you plan on throwing something on like a Greddy Turbokit or oem DSM setup, these systems are internally gated and not meant for too extreme HP numbers. Most often times, people get "boost happy" and up the boost much further than the whole turbo system can take and end up grenading their engine due to boost creep. Boost creep is not something you want.... Run a properly sized external wastegate and you will be happy.

Can you run both? Not that you would want to but is it possible.

sorta like running two blow off valves? Seen one mag do that...said they wanted to "over do it" cause they didn't want to blow the engine.

Would running two waste gates be safer?

I think instead of spending the time and energy to put in two wastegates, it would be better to just get ONE quality wastegate. plus all modern engine management systems have a boost cut feature which should save your motor if your wastegate fails

the only advantage to running an internal one is that it is cheaper when you are doing a DSM setup for example. i would say when you are getting close to 300 flywheel hp, you should start thinking about an external wastegate.. but it depends on the setup

You can by pass the internal gate correct? Then you can use an external and be set.

Internal is nice that since it is easy and cheap...But I prefer an external...Its easier to maintain and service. The external is also more reliable than the internal setup. Plus allowing you to take out the external WG allows you to change spring pressure if necessary.

Not really. I've seen much more consistency with OEM internal wastegates than I have with Chinese external wastegates. Those(Chinese) fluctuate like a mofo.

There's no point in running to waste gates on a single scroll turbo(especially if you're gonna do internal and external). One lets pressure out from the manifold, and one from the turbine. If you use both together, it's possible that both will try to open at the same time and will loose too much boost. Kinda like running a HUGE single wastegate at lower boost pressure, they're inaccurate and boost will fluctuate.

Run a quality external wastegate. But if you're doing a cheap dsm setup, there's no need for one.

We have a china 60mm imitation HKS on my friends car...works 100x better than the synapse which is pretty sad. Depends its a hit or miss with the chinese externals. Usually I would recommend name brand but HKS externals are not cheap.

Tial is nice thats what my buddy had before he sold his. He just needed a bigger gate and Tial was up there...So he bought the HKS for 100 bucks lol. . I have a few buddies running XS power 46mm also. But i would recommend name brand for high dollar builds and reliability.

wouldn't a quality external be better than OEM internal as far as overall safety?
