    Knock Knock Knock

yeah so last night im driving the car and mike says do you hear that noise? i say what noise so he turns the radio off and we listen knock knock knock. we stop look in the engine bay cant see anything out of the ordinary, listen to the exhaust sounds fine. he says it sounds like a rod bearing, great thats all i need, so we take it home and get the stethy after it and its a rod bearing you can hear it knock knock knock. I was told h23's are known to do this but im not sure why it happened and if i can prevent it in the future. He thinks we caught it in time and will be able to just change the bearings out. he will drop the pan today and see. Any ideas what i did or how to prevent in the future?

I spun a rod bearing on my f22. Honda bearings arent the strongest. I asked few mecahnics about what can cause it and here is what i was told....
    1. over revving the engine
    2. lack of oil in the engine
    3. detonation

    are all possible causes.
To prevent this from happening I got Toga high rpm bearings for my new engine. BTW i was not able to save the old engine(one with spunbearing) after changing the bearings out it kept going back and doing the same thing after few miles.

http://importperformanceparts.net/ 69$ for just rod bearings. I got both the rod and the main bearings but u wont be able to change the mains without taking the motor out.

theres nothing really to be done to stop rod knock especially on a stock or built motor. Depending on the motors age in your case it was bound to happen. The turbo's will definitely break teh engine down in almost any form. But hey thats the risk you take when you boost. The best thing you can do now is build that bad boy up and get at it again.

so we took it apart and its the main bearings the rod bearings are fine and the crank is fine. so we will go order new bearings on mon and put her back together. my problem was oil starvation, it was low on oil seeing the turbo is eating oil and i didnt check the levels, so a expensive lesson, but it looks like it was caught in time. here are pics of the bearings.

Oh and what do you mean with my engine it was bound to happen my engine has 35,000 miles on it??? i know what i did, im stupid but hey ill learn. everyone fucks up once and awhile

I think ACL makes bearings for the h23.

crank is fine absolutly no wear on it. the rod bearing are like new just the main bearings i think 2 3 and 4 the middle ones. we caught it in time so it didnt do any large damage. gonna get the honda bearings ordered tomorrow. mikes b16 has gone thro the bearings before and he put the honda ones in and its fine and he revs alot higher than i ever thought of, so it will be fine. should have it back up and running by wed. im not real upset, just a hard lesson to learn. anyone know the torque on the bottom end for the h23? i cant find a manual for it. gonna check at honda for one tomorrow but if not i need the #'s so mike can torque it all down.

we have been rev'ing with a limiter at stock limits and havent been bouncing it off of it. it was oil starvation the turbo seals are gone and it drinks oil i hadnt checked it this week and we were pretty rough on it the weekend before so it needed oil. the h23 is a good engine but i have herd that they are sensive when it comes to its bearings. its a good strong enigne to boost just make sure it always has alots of oil, i ran synthetic and that just might of saved my crank from being toast too. dont let my lesson steer you away from the h23, i absolutly love it and the turbo.

I do need to know how to read the bearings so when i go to honda i can get the right ones for the car. anyone know about the color codes and #'s for the h23?
