Please DO NOT Post In The General Section

From this point on until otherwise briefed, posting in the general section of Performance Tech is prohibited. The only thing to remain here will be the stickies. We would just delete this section, but that would cause unintended results.

The majority of the threads created can appropriately be placed in one of the Performance Tech sub-forums or Technical; and the posting of them here is detrimental to the activity of said forums. If you have any questions about where you need to place your thread PM me or one of the other mods.

For the most part you all have caught on without this post, but there have been a few habitual offenders that forced me to say this.

Everyone will get a couple of warnings from here on out, after that I just start deleting threads.

Again if you have any questions, PM me or one of the other mods.

    Header questions

I have Ben looking into a new header to get rid of my stock
I'm not raceing with my car so I don't think I need anything to high up
I though would like to get the most out of my A6.

    Looked at a 2
    Megan raceing
DC (which I know are great but I don't know if the money is worth it for a non raceing car)

    What's a good setup ?

Honestly, a generic header will do just fine. With headers like that, and the DC included, you really won't pick up any power unless you're coming from an F22A1 manifold. The reason is that it's not really any different than the F22A4 header in design and the F22A6 manifold is decent enough for what it is. However it does look much nicer than anything OEM and you can easily add a 2.5 collector to really open it up. I would use a new MLS gasket on the head flange and the Subaru Fel-Pro gasket on in between the upper and lower portions. Don't attach the header to the back of the block with the provided tab. The ratting will likely break it as a few members here have found.

I will probably then go with a Megan because I like a bit of quality in the parts I buy. Now about how I mount the set up your talking about the tab looking peice with 2 bolt holes at the bottom of the down pipe I think it's called or where the first exhaust mount is right after the Kevlar looking peice ( flex pipe?) let me know if any of that's understandable. ha ha

      Thanks

        Who's Ben?

Are you in California? If so, go with DC. They are CARB exempt, so you won't get hassled by the fuzz. The DC build quality is considerably better than Megan as well.
Though Jarrett is right... you won't gain terribly much with one of those. The only header that really shows any significant gains is the Bisimoto header... not cheap, and not CARB exempt.

A larger collector can be welded on, as mentioned, and it has shown to make considerable improvements to the power produced by the DC design. However, with the price of a DC header (new), the price of a good larger collector (like Burns Stainless), and the price of having that collector welded on by a professional... you're approaching Bisimoto prices.

I didn't notice you were in California. If you want a header your options are pretty much the DC or an A4 manifold.

If you think Megan is a symbol of quality then you've been fooled by marketing. 5 years ago Megan was ripping off everyone's designs and selling them on eBay for cheap. Now they've just made enough money doing so and gotten their name out enough that people associate them with a major, quality brand. Just like Skunk2 did in the '90s. But don't start telling people that or you'll get e-threats.

Skunk2 will put a bounty on your head!

Yeah, Megan Racing has always been an "ebay" brand. A knockoff brand. Among the better knockoff brands, mind you... but still a knockoff. OBX is another one in the same boat (cheap knockoff, but decent quality for what it is.) OBX headers MIGHT actually be CARB exempt. I'm not certain, but it's worth looking into. They're likely to be cheaper than DC (though not made as well.)

I assume Modesto is California. I've noticed that Cali guys tend to believe the rest of the world knows all of the town names there. We don't, of course... but still. Whenever I see just a town name, I usually assume it's in California.

I wasn't wanting to throw 350+ into a system for the car though I did not know/ don't know a lot about reputable brands (this is why I ask). If your opinion is DC as a number one and possibly OBX as a cheaper generic one, I may just go and save a bit and be happier with a good quality but I guess only so many cb guys use D.c over a generic for racing a h22 ? I yes am in California and modesto is pretty much 30 miles south of Stockton maybe a few members are from there and not to be mean but yes that's Nor Cal territory.
I will probably wait then to get a D.C because of the fact that the guy that installed my engine was a dum a** and left the A1 (lx) header attached that's why I wanted to upgrade and since I plan on giving my car a few upgrades come the beginning of the year. Sorry about the Ben part just a figure of poor speech on my part.

Thanks and I will look into the carb exempt in each header worst thing is to buy a header that's illegal to have and I won't be able to smog my car.

Not many people that do any serious racing would use a generic design anyway. The DC design, while decent and well made, is still generic.

DC is your best bet for quality, fitment, and legality. They make larger collector models for the H22... probably not for the F22 though.

How is that not an immediate deal-breaker?

And who said anything about racing H22As? I'm not telling you that either one is going to help you go ricer-boy racing. I just said that they will all give little to no power gain over the factory A4 manifold or A6 manifold. Since you have an A1 manifold you'll probably see somewhere in the neighborhood of 5hp. Embrace it for what it is and don't assume that you're going to be driving a fast car from that point on.

A header that's not CARB legal could also get your car impounded if a cop cares to do so. It's not common, but sometimes they like to make an example out of import drivers.

Alright. 5hp isn't enough to make this hit the top of my list
I just don't like the look of the F engine with its stock exhaust manifold
I think for anything if there isn't a lot of noticeable hp upgrade il just get a generic because as you stated the DC is probably a higher quality but is still generic. Since California cars have to meet a emissions, visual, timing every two years I will end up getting a OBX or something like that. I didn't mean to point out The H motors as one I just wanted to figure out what the cb7 community would use. And I never intend to race my A6 I just like the look of some aftermarket setup was thinking of quality so I didn't crack it within the first few months I have it installed on my car thank you for both input's in the thread
