    18s - Tire size recs?

I posted this at Club240 also, but those guys are dicks, so I don't expect a lot of help, so I'm hoping someone on here knows tires pretty well.

I recently puchased a set of wheels for my 97 240SX, 18x8.5 in the front, 18x9.5 in the rear. The offset is +35(yes, they fit).
I have plenty of clearance in the rear, but in the front I can just fit my pinky finger in between the rim and the shocks.

I need to find out what you guys recommend for tire sizes, something that fits flush with the sides of the wheels or is stretched a little.

The local tire store suggested 235/40/18 in the front, and 265/35/18 in the rear.

Thoughts, comments, and suggestions are welcome.

with the front wheels, you can always add spacers(2mm -5mm) to push the wheel out a little more away from the hub. but those tires sizes recommended by the shop sounds just about right. nice buy on the wheels and of course, pics please.

I may be adding spacers later. Wheels and tires aren't cheap, so spacers have to wait. Pics will be coming as soon as I get the wheels mounted, which- depending on cost- may be this fall or next spring.

More input is welcome, not that I don't trust Primo. Quick response, by the way.

spacers aren't that expensive. check out www.onetongarage.com for 5mm or 10mm spacers.

No response from the douches over at club240. I can't stand even searching over there, they're all such A-holes. I did find that a 235 may rub in the front. I wish I understood the tire sizes, like if you change to a 225, then what does the sidewall measurement go to? Anyone have a cool link that explains or calculates this?

215, 225, 235, etc.. is the width of the tire.

35,40, 45, etc.. is the profile(more of the thickness/height of the sidewall on the tire)

reason why the shop recommends 235(and so do i) is coz the width of the wheel is 8.5in. just add the spacers up front and you won't have a problem w/the wheel rubbing up against the hub/suspension components.

just because a question goes unanswered doesn't mean that people are a-holes. if you can't stand searching, you should ask yourself if you really need to know. and if you don't want to search, just run what the tire shop is telling you.

i don't know 240s well, but you're likely to rub with any size tire. i assume you're not prepared to run a highly stretched tire:

                that's a 215/35 tire on a 18 x 10.5 inch wheel.

why not be bold and run a 215/35/18 or a 225/35/18 all the way around?!

It not that they're jerks because questions go unanswered(though they do), but because they're all too consumed with their low-offset penis envy to be of any help. They can't seem to understand why anyone would want a 240 and not want to drift it, and buy $3000 JDM Dorifto tYte wheels to go on it. I'm rambling, sorry.

Anyways, as I'm sure it is obvious, I don't know a lot about tires(though I do know what the numbers mean). So I'm not interested in being EXTREME or bold or whatever, I just want a wheel and tire combo that doesn't hit anything. And the cheaper I can get it the better.

If running a stretched tire means I can get tires cheaper, and it doesn't cause any driveability problems( do you see all that gunk between the wheel and tire on that picture? I bet it leaks like a bitch.), then I'm cool with that.

Hope no one here took offense, I'm kinda frustrated with the lack of intelligent life on this planet today.

Edit: Also, the tires shops around here aren't really knowledgeable about anything that isn't stock. The guy just read those sizes out of a book, so I wanted to ask people with more expertise and understanding of what I was doing.

i don't think el was serious. running your tires like that is one of the worse things you can do. not only are the tires stretched out to its max, but the lip of the wheel is completely exposed. driveablitlity is not encouraged at all, dangerous at most. trust me, i may not be Mr. Goodyear, but i'm confident in what i've posted so far

i think the problem is that you're trying to run a relatively wide wheel with the wrong budget.

stretching a tire tends to be done to get a rather large wheel to fit under the fender and/or have an extremem look and/or change the handling charicteristics... with all of that said, in the end, a stretched tire tends to be run with negative camber- and a rather large degree at that.

tires that are stretched tend to have a lower relative side wall, and are not as wide as the wheels they're going on... i.e. they are not for the faint at heart, because you expose the edge of the rim, and the tires will likely wear a bit more quickly than the average tire on the average wheel.

that's the basis that your likely being approached on. to me it's understandable, because that's their turf and, apparently from your point of view, their way or the highway!

in any event, it sounds to me as though you should just run what the tire shop tells you because it won't be a stretched tire, and apparently will fit your desires. put a spacer with it to push it away from the suspension components, and towards the fender. sounds simple enough to me.

                      edit:

nothing wrong with a little bit of stretch!

                      currently i have a 195 tire on a 7 inch wide wheel... i think i want to step down to a 185... or maybe a 175!

Stretched tires are cheaper, but I think there's to many cons to justify that pro.

Thanks for the link Elliot, great site, looks like a good product.

like i said, it's not for the faint at heart. honestly, if you're not down for it, just run the conservative specs the tire shop gave you.

you may also find it hard to find a shop that will put a stretched tire on a wheel anyway.

im not sure where to put this . . . but i dont want to start a new thread, so its gonna go here, since it fits.

im currently looking for new tires to replace my old ones that are worn pretty bad, and im just wondering if a 195 width is too wide for a 5 inch wide wheel . . . ive got 94 ex 7 spokes (they are 5 inches wide right?) . . . i dont want to order tires that arent gonna fit

They should be wider than 5in, I believe stock is 6in. And 195/60/15 is the stock tire size.

Thanks for jackin' my thread, by the way. Oh well, I think I'm done with it.
