    **p13/p28/p72..what ecu for the H22**

i know the p13 is the stock ecu for the H22..i plan on installing a skunk2 IM which eliminates the IAB's..now, i've read that a chipped p28 runs great with the H22 coz it eliminates the knock sensor, raises rev limiter, and adds an IAB function..since i won't have IAB's w/ the skunk2 IM, am i better off using a stock p13?, or even a p72?, similar to a chipped p28, minus the IAB function

The P28 actually DOESN'T deal with the IABs. That's why many H22 owners choose the P72, which does. You can set them using the P28, but there's no true control function, or so I'm told.

You can't chip the P13, so that really isn't a good choice if you're looking into ECU tuning. The P28 will probably be your best bet. It also seems to have the most support, and the best gains on the H22 seem to be had with it. It's also cheaper than the P72

Check www.car-part.com for the P28. Look for a 93 Civic EX/Si (1.6L manual, federal emissions) They start around $300 and can be found as low as $50. I'm waiting to find mine on there

..ok cool, so a p28 is the best bet. i'm asking coz i am thinking of buying a chipped p28, but on the other hand, i can get a p72 practically for free

..just wanted to know what are the advantages/disadvantages between the p28 and p72

Well, one major disadvantage to the P72 is the cost, so you've bypassed that. I've read on the board here (I think BustedLX said it) that no major gains have been shown by using a P72 instead of a P28. As far as I know, there are no real drawbacks to either, and the P72 allows for IABs, so that's a plus. If you can get the P72 practically free, then go for it! If you don't like it, sell it for enough money to buy 2 P28s!

Also, look into chipping the ECU yourself. People who sell chipped ECUs usually ask WAY too much. Plus, if someone is going to tinker with MY ECU, it's gonna be me or someone I trust (prolly good ol' cpmike in my case ) I wouldn't trust some random shmoe who's asking $150 for one...

As said before, the main reason why people use P72's vs. P28's is to control the IAB's and that's it...

The P72 code is slightly different than P28 code and IMO it runs better... but it is possible to run P72 code/programs on a P28 so that is a moot point...

P28/P72's also eliminate the EGR... so with the Skank2 mani that would be a plus...

If you wanted to keep the knock sensor you could also run a P30...

so "Z", going with p72 is a good choice, right? i am thinking of buying a p28 from BustedLx so i can compare the two myself...thanks for the info fellaz!

either will work well if you take the time to setup a good tune...

You can't really just slap in a P28 or a P72 and a generic H22 program and expect it to run like a dream... you need some wideband tuning on the street or a dyno or both to realize the full potential...

I personally like the P72 code a little better with tweaked MAP scalars... it idled a little better than base P28 or P72 code... that's all I was saying...

Go to the HondaSociety DOHC forum and read up a little on the P13 stuff... Willie is doing some testing with decent results and it's still able to be tweaked a bit with good results...

ECU tuning is more about who's tuning it and with what than what ECU you use...ya know what I'm sayin...Check out MRX's thread on it in performance to get a little better feel for what's involved...http://www.cb7tuner.com/vbb/showthre...threadid=10335 there are some good links in that thread...and Busted had a good thread about dyno tuning his P28 thta could be helpful...

oh yeah also, you guys have forgotten the reason that most people switch to a p28/p72. IT IS BECAUSE YOU CAN GET HONDATA! or uberdata or aem. and then you can tune your motor alot better. well atleast the NA and FI freaks do...

or you can skip spending all that money on a hondata and find someone who can rom tune. basically, the ecu harness is wired directly to a laptop and ignition and fuel can be changed on the fly... without having to burn a new chip everytime a change it made. then the settings are saved and a single chip is burned once the desired results are met.

btw, i have a p72 with a custom h22 map and knock sensor taken off. im thinking of getting the governer taken off, but i know nothing good could come of that.

Is there a way to use a laptop to tune the car on the fly and retain the settings? Like Hondata does? Tuning and then burning a chip is a definite step forward (and can be done for less than $400 in parts, including the ECU). Having a full standalone that doesn't require having chips burned would be even better!

Well I'm runnig a chipped P28 and while it's not tuned, it was a cheap upgrade that made me real happy. I could make VTEC anywhere (which I made at 4.7k). Sick of that 5200-5400 engagement or where ever it was.

i think that the gsr ecu which is a p72 right?runs better i seens a dyno reslut and the gsr ecu works alot better for the h22.

what motor do you have? and when vtec kicks, do you feel an instant burst of speed?

yes you can retain the settings. thats the purpose of tuning that way. change whatever you want as many times as you want, and when you've reached peak power, save and burn. this can all be done for less than $400 depending on who you know. i got a socketed p72 for $150. i dont count dyno time, cause youll have to pay that no matter what system youre tuning.

When I tune I use an Xtronics emulator so I don't have to constantly reburn chips. I just load the new buffer, shut the car off, send the buffer to the emu, and restart. Takes a few seconds and beats the piss out of pulling, burning, etc. Then when I'm at the tune I want I just burn it and slap it in their ECU.

It's even faster when I tune Hondata's because Hondata's editor software has an emulator tab already in the program which I can send just the map I last edited or the whole rom again.

Uberdata is my tuning software of choice. The datalogging with the Wideband input is awesome I can do almost everything (except for the emu) in one program. Knowing Uberdata I'm sure EMU interface is a few versions away.
