    JDM H22A smog legal?

i got a really really bad question to ask ...ok so you kno that california has all these smog test.....well im wondering if I import a JDM H22A and swap it into a my 92 honda accord LX would it pass smog ...thanks for tha help

Simple answer. No. JDM motors will not pass CA smog if you do it the right way, which means going to a smog referee and having it BARred.

Otherwise you would have to find someone who could (and would) smog it for you illegally (which means you pay them quite a bit usually). It would be easier to pay a little extra to get a USDM H22 and going that route.

    Good luck!

not true...my OLD 91 accord passed smog, after i replaced my old f22a1 with the JDM replacement engine (f20a SOHC). i HAD to get it smogged legally because i was selling the car to a kid and the parents wanted all legit stuff.

i would recommend getting a GOOD tune up before taking it in, just in case.

So you went to a smog referree and got the BAR label? Or you took it to a smog shop and they just smogged it, not knowing it was a JDM engine swap?

I'm just curious. I've heard many times that we can't have JDM motors in CA. I want to put a ZC in my Civic!

Depends on your state, some states inspections are very unforgiving like Cali. And some states like Fla done even have state inspection. So it depends on where you live.

P.S. You will have a harder time passing a Vtec Jdm engine over the non vtecs. Most of the Vtec engines (type-r and type-s engiens) have hotter cams thus raising the emissions as compared to their U.S. counterparts.

i had a jdm h22a motor pass smog with a new set of plugs, and a new cat. This was passed the legit way. so all the misconceptions that a jdm motor will not pass is a bunch of bull. I passed it with a jdm p13 ecu, so it can be done. Not hating just stating the facts! My friend passed with a euro r in his civic, so dont believe all the smog horror stories. Oh and it was done in SO CAL!

No one has answered my question. All of you CA people that are smogging your JDM motors, are you taking it to a regular smog shop and having them smog it or are you going to a ref and getting a BAR label (which, BTW is the ONLY legit way to do it in CA)? I'll ask the ref next time I go, but I would like to hear how other people are doing this...

i got a bar label for my jdm motor, and now i can go to any test only shop. even all the Wacki Packi owned ones!

its easy, i had a del sol with a built gsr, ctr cams, skunk 2 intake manifold, port and polshed head pass with the bar. so its not bad at all!

ive never tried to take it to a ref station...but from what i hear, i wont pass. i passed a regular "test only" smog, but they dont look for anything. to get a bar sticker theyre supposed to check, for one, the stock ecu... right there, id fail.

passing the BAR exam isn't too difficult even with a JDM motor. you might need a USDM ecu though. strap down the ecu and make it look clean. this goes for your engine bay as well. don't have wires dangling. if you do, it will make it look suspicious on the quality of your swap. i've seen a BAR sticker in a civic with a JDM H22! it can be done.

connect all the knock and 02 sensors. run a cat. have a good exhaust and intake. basically make it look like it was done correctly (which should be true in the first place). the sniffer shouldn't be a problem if you installed your motor correctly and everything is in good shape.

as far as simple smog testing in california, our cars are labeled "test-only" due to its age. this means we can only go to test-only stations which are more strict on emissions. california has the strictest smog laws in the nation. if you can pass smog here, you can pass smog everywhere else.

my friend just got a bar label in his 2000 civic si. He has a euro r h22a motor in there. Basically a 11:1 compression motor, aggressive cams, and single runner intake manifold and it passed clean. it was even dynoed and put down 200 to the wheels. STOCK! So dont believe the hype about it not passing. just do your install correctly and you should be good to go!

test only, as in smog referee station? or just getting a smog certificate from your local tune n' lube shops?

That motor is too different from the US counterpart. I think he may have got really lucky on that one.
