losing 1 quart of oil after swap?

ok i'm stumped. i just finished my swap (h22a) and have driven the car for only a week with no vtec engagements or high reving. i checked the oil to find it at the lowest level?! i put 5 quarts of 10w-30 initially.

obviously i checked the ground for leaks and there is a dime sized puddle everywhere i park. no problem but can this really drain 1 full quart of oil in 1 week?! is it normal for a new motor to consume that much oil on it's maiden drive?! please give me good news.

btw, there is no smoke so i don't think the internals are affecting anything (i hope) . i'm also using the accord oil pan and pickup. the accord pickup is exactly the same as the h22a. the oil pan differs a little but it works. can this be causing this as well? i will check for the source of the leak today but why 1 quart?!

Maybe because the accord oil pan holds less oil than the h22 oil pan? Thats what i have heard maybe put a lil too much? 5 quarts seems a lot for an f22 oil pan. You check around the seals and such to see if theres anything visibly leaking?(if you did id double check it just in case) Check around the oil filter and such?

Right, oil filter, timing cover and also check under your distributor. Is there any oil on your transmission? If you still can't find it, try parking your car for a while on a surface where the spot will be visible and take note of exactly where the spot is in relation to your car(you'll have to peek underneath for that) then pop the hood an see if you can trace the leak by looking in the vicinity that you noted earlier.

Honestly, I wouldnt worry about it. Perhaps the motor sat for awhile and oil needs to get in there again. Also, if your leaking a bit then theres some as well. Ive read so many things about vtec motors drinking oil, then after along time they stop completely. There is no explanation for it.

When i did my swap(replaced all the seals timing basically everything), mine did drink a lil oil since i noticed a puff of blue smoke every now and then, but that was when i was engaging VTEC. I would lose some oil but not as much as timmy0tool. Now my H doesnt do it anymore so dunno guess its part of break in? I did drive my car easy for about 400-500 did another oil change and started to drive it hard so it would clean out the engine a lil.

hmm yeah i can source the leak. i'm just curious on the high consumption oil. i mean 1 quart is a lot to leak and i only see a small dime-sized puddle around the drain plug area. the motor has just been swapped and maybe being dry for a while uses all that oil to lubricate the parts . thanks for the replies!

and the accord pan can hold 5 quarts. i put that much and the level was at the top dot on the h22a dipstick initally.

Ahh gotcha didnt know that since the F22 oil pan looks a lil smaller. Well if thats your only leak maybe thats where its coming from? Maybe not a tight enough seal around the threads? Are you using synthetic or reg oil?

i'm using regular 10w-30. my accord pan is known to leak at the drain plug so i'm already pointing to that as the culprit. i'm just stumped on why the loss of so much oil in such little time.

and yes the pan does look smaller. i should have taken an pic when i had both off together. the h22a pan is deeper but the oil pickup and dip stick are in the same location.

Thats good to know. Maybe the the leak has just gotten worse slowly?

I would guess that it was a combo of the oil plug leak and the engine being new. When the motor is new, it'll use some extra oil on its initial change just because it is lubricating stuff that hasnt been in forever.

If it leaks a quart again, then you can start to wonder.

talked to my buddy who is a honda tech and he said that the h22a uses 5.7 quarts of oil!!! so i was already short 0.7 quarts. also at initial startup after being unused for so long the oil will need flow through the motor. this will take more oil as well.

so it's all good now. after adding more oil, it hasn't gone down since. phew!

When I did my last oil/filter change, I put in 5 qts and it was up to the "full" dot on the dipstick. I started the car and ran it for a minute or so and checked the oil again and I had to add about 1/2 qt to get it back up to full. It fills up the filter on initial startup. Nothing to worry about unless it continues to lose oil, although VTEC engagement does use a bit of oil too...

lmao..I thought you knew this....don't people fill their cars to the top level, then run the car for a few seconds to let it fill the new oil filter, etc... then check again and top off?? thought this was standard procedure

i was so used to only putting 4 quarts of oil. but why would the oil filter take 1 quart of oil? yeah i should have rechecked the level the next day especially since it was a new swap. i guess i was too excited LOL! i ended up adding 1.5 quarts after a week. lesson learned!

to correct a misconception....the f22 oil pan is the same as the h22 one, same with the pick up. thats why honda gives them all teh same part number.
