Auto/Manual Axle Question

I was wondering if this would work, havent heard of anyone doing it, but anyways..

Could you take the intermediate shaft and axle off of a manual car and use it on an auto tranny?

I figured that would eliminate that stupid long axle on the automatics, which I know for a fact is a pain in the ass to change, but also seems like it would be better to have a shorter axle for performance use to not snap the axles as much.

Anyone know?

the intermediate shaft and short axle, together, is longer than the "long" automatic axle... so no it isnt going to work.

So then the auto tranny extends farther towards the passenger side than the manual. Hmm.
