    H22a4 Problem Please help

    So i recently dropped my H22a4 in my car it has Kayama cam gears megan racing headers we shaved the heads i forgot the exact measurements a chipped P13 and my Problem is how come my VTEC isnt working i can take it up to 5000 and when it goes to 5500 it bogs down a TINY bit then goes back up and it takes a long time for it to bring it up to high RPM's so ive asked several people and they say numerous things such as :

    - The injectors are bad or dirty

    - The ECU is bad

    - Needs new Oil Pump

    - Timing of Cam gears and Pulley are off

    - Bad Vtec Solenoid

    we had the engine running STRONG a fuck but the Timing belt broke when the car was TURNED off we checked the heads and valves NOTHING was bent and we had a leak of water to the Number 2 cause the head gasket blew and there might be a possibiltie that the Vtec Solenoid got fucked up so thats the WHOLE story but for now the car runs GREAT but still no vtec or high rpms

    so any ideas or feedback would be awesome
    Thanks

          As mike said VTEC solenoid might need some cleaning. Since 5500 is about where the h22a engages if I remember correctly.

            -oil could have water in it too, so replace the oil and don't overfill (4qts then check, should hold 5-ish)....too much fluid in the crankcase means it's gonna hinder the crank from spinning

            but something doesn't make sense.....the belt broke while the car was off? you somehow managed a blown headgasket as well? the car wasn't off for that, was it?

            i have a feeling you're giving us some of the info, not all of it.......things aren't adding up and a real diagnosis probably won't happen without the whole story...

            how'd you blow the headgasket?

            sure the head didn't get a hairline crack (easy to miss)

            what's the compression numbers, are they ok?

            any oil getting into the coolant or vice versa?

              the STORY... lol

              H was in everything was plugged in and ready to go but when we started it up black smoke was everywhere so we turned it off and we noticed they was water in the number to and we diagnosed it and found out it was a blown head gasket we DID NOT replace before we put in the engine and yes i know how smart am i? ha anyways we got the head gasket and put it in and started her up again 2ND TIME and she was running strong as fuck vtec was working fine and dandy we let her run so she can run off the water and all that shit and then when we were gonna take her off the lift we turned off the car and right when everything was turning off the timing belt snapped and whoa was i bummed haha but we then picked up a HONDA belt made FOR THE 98 PRELULDE and we got everything in place and we checked the valves and nothign was bent of fucked up from the timing belt snapping so after the new belt was put in she ran great but at 5500 she sputters a little bit and then goes back up like she cant crack VTEC at all like its all motor im hearing not VTEC is fucking suck ass but thats the story i hope some of you can FURTHER help me out but Sunday some technicians from a honda dealership are gonna trouble shoot her and do the whole thing from checking valves, re doing TIMING, Cleaning injectors, checking out the VTEC solenoid ETC ETC....

              im aiming for next saturday for VTEC to work cause im taking my car to Kent for the races and testing this bitch out cause she wants to woop some ass on the streets. ill post pics of the CHASSIS soon but in the mean time hang tight and if you have any feedback please let me know thanks guys

                try running direct current to the solenoid just to make sure it is opening...u should be able to hear some clicking sound as u put 12 volts on it meaning that it is opening and vtec should be engaging... (howver dont do it for too long the objective is to just give the solenoid a few jolts of that much current)...

                      Yep guess you learned to do basic maintenance before just throwing an h22a in there. Check timing as mentioned and what did you chip your p13 with.

                        I did a single cam swap in my 92 and it would not crack vtec when it needed it, it would hit at 2500 rpm and ran like shit. No balls at all. I put a timing light on it and got the ignition in time but valve lift wasn't in time. Ecto1 has it now and he got it timed and it runs pretty good now. I'd put my money on timing it isn't hard to fuck up, trust me i did.

                            We fixed time and theres no diffrence engine still bogs out at 5500 and vtec still isnt working. and ideas?

                            2 possibilities IM thinking is

                            * Vtec Solenoid is shot

                            or

                            * ECU = complete shit.

                            any ideas anyone?!

                              I've never heard of dual vtec at 4400 and 5700. Are you talking about the iabs for one of those rpms? Most the generic ebay jun/spoon/etc chips are pretty crappy sorry to say, from what I have seen they remove the stock speed limiter, raise the rev limit and possibly advance timing with no regard to YOUR mods of course. My recommendation would be to either remove the chip and run the stock program if possible for troubleshooting, or get a chipped p28 with an h22 basemap.
