    JDM... maybe...

First of all, it looks like I'm back w/ my wagon. Not sure if ya'll remember me... but I have a '91 EX. Motor went bad, so I said screw it and bought a '00 Camry, and hate it. It's slow, and has NO personality. Dad is also losing his job to the Chinese (he's worked at Snap-On tools in Johnson City, TN for 29 years), so he can't help me anymore. It's going back, and I need a motor.

Are JDM engines for real? Is the 50k-60k really accurate mileage? How do we know that? Compression testing?

I'm just trying to decide whether to pay a little more for a JDM engine, or if I should let a local honda salvage yard/garage replace my engine w/ one of their USDM for $800. That's the cost of the engine and labor, by the way. I'm sticking w/ a F22. If JDM really is better, then I'm definitely willing to pay for it. I would even get to keep my motor for parts that way. Do these engines last? There's an importer in Asheville that I can drive to to pick up the motor.

Is it worth it? Are the JDM engines reliable? If the mileage is for real, then I guess I'm all for it.

I can't wait to get back in my wagon!

the miles importers give you (30-50kish) is just an average or estimate. the only way to know 100% is to be there at the time they pull the engine from the car and look at the mileage.

since you said you can go down to the place that imports, thats prolly your best bet. that way you can inspect the engine, look it over look inside (or wiht the valve cover off, if they let u) to see how dirty it is. also look for compression test tags. some places have them i know the place ive gone to has them.

is JDM reliable? yes. why wouldnt they be. just as reliable as pickin up a USDM engine from ur local junker. you said ur stickin with a F22? SOHC? cuz 800 from ur local junker is expensive!

anyway do a little reading on this site, everything can be answered for you with a little self motivation & searching

    best of luck
    Sean

They're moving a perfectly productive plant to China. Shutting it down after 32 years of operation. No problems with their production, they just want more profits for their executives I guess. I swear, America's middle class is gonna be destroyed before long.

just go to your local import motor supply store. Then go and inspect the motors for yourself and just inspect them well check for broken sensors really dirty oil from the dipstick work crankpullies, unneccessary leakage on not so obvious sides of the motor and then just keep lookin around until you fint the right one. I lucked out and got my type S ahhhhhhhh victory.

Eh, sounds like a good deal, but I really want to stay away from a swap. If I can keep the wagon long enough, I'll swap later. I'm just looking for a direct replacement JDM F22Ax.

Do the JDM's have a difference like the USDM's F22A4 and xA6 and everything? Or are they all 140 horses?

dude its not worth it to put a stock motor back in

ive always had a saying, whatever sets you back fix it better... meaning if your savin up money to do a swap and ur motor blows dont cheap out and go back to where u started with a stock motor, burn a whole in your wallet and get a bigger one. and shit my h cost 800 just for the motor without tranny...

you can get an f22b1 for like 500 bucks shipped you just have to look around.... and jdm motors seem to be stronger to me... i dunno why maybe its because the only motor i havent blown in a car are the 2 jdm ones in my cars...

Are you looking to make some major power down the line? Stock replacement? Or just something zippy for the time being?

The F22 actually flows VERY well (after reading some of the posts by bisimoto, I'm convinced that the F22A has better flow characteristics than the H22 or F22B1 (which is actually a pretty crap motor). A JDM F22 would be a good choice, and rather inexpensive.

The H22 would make a nice zippy car if you want to retain a basically stock motor. Heavily modifying an H22 is rather pricey.

JDM motors may or may not have the assumed low mileage. It IS true that laws and taxes in Japan make owning a car over a certain age or mileage fairly impractical, so many cars are put out to pasture at a rather young age by our standards. A reputable dealer like www.hmotorsonline.com would be your best bet to actually get one of those. The not-so-reputable dealers could be selling anything... broken motors, Australian/NZ motors, hell... USDM motors with the numbers ground off!

USDM engines aren't as reliable, IMO. They generally have higher mileage, are subject to more lenient laws, and can be found in boneyards owned by people that have no idea how to tell a good motor from a bad one. At least you have a knowledgable person selecting the motors when dealing with a good JDM dealer! Their reputation is on the line then! Junkyard mentalities are "hey, it's junk... if it works, great. if not, you assumed the risk!"
That doesn't mean that a USDM engine is bad... it will certianly pass emissions if it's healthy (JDM engines may not). I would take great care in finding a good USDM engine if you go that route though. Maybe even from a member here that swapped or had a rear wreck.

I totally agree. I thought that even before I learned how much potential the F22A has!

I have my heart set on getting a Galant VR4 for my second car... if that falls through, I think I may go for an NA F22A powered CB7.

Thanks guys... all I want right now is a hassle free commuter car. I drive around 60 miles a day and need the wagon to be as rock solid reliable as possible. After hearing your opinion, I think I'm going to drive to Asheville for a JDM F22A... Really can't beat that low mileage.

I'm telling you, in the long run, this option is great and very reasonable.
They pretty much are plug and play.

If your goal is eventually have a swap, this is an excellent chance.

I would be wary. Wagalude is no idiot, but I would still be wary of a motor that was reassembled by another enthusiast... at least for a car I would need to be reliable!

JDM F22A or F22B DOHC (around $600-$800 shipped for either) would be a smart choice for a reliable, low budget swap. H22A would be nice, but if your budget isn't right, don't bother trying to find a cheap one. You're better off with a quality motor from a reliable distributor than a cheap motor that won't last. (I know there are people who have gotten lucky with cheap motors, ebay motors, and junkyard motors... but the risk is considerably higher!)
