    h22 head on f22b1?

Just wondering if anyone knew off the top of their head if it's easy to do an H22 head swap onto an F22b1 sohc VTEC (obd1). I want to use the F22 block if possible, as it (from what I hear) can handle more boost than the H22 block. Boost is still a long ways away, but I would like to build accordingly.

Also wondering if an M2B4 tranny (Prelude LSD tranny) will fit easily onto the F22b1 block, or if it would be better to do an LSD from Quaife or Phantomgrip or some other company.

    Thanks for responses.

The block is similar to the F22A if not the same. The only difference is the head. So yes essentially it will bolt on. And yea the H series will fit. I am surprised your asking this thought you would know??

      thanks for the response.

I've never really been one to do my own work... but now that i have a garage, I can!

both my other motor swaps were all JDM prelude stuff... no mix n match, so i havn't researched it much.

I thought I read somewhere once that you have to block off some coolant passages or something, as the head and block ports dont match up perfectly. Is this true?

      Thanks again!

yeap on the dot you have to plug a coolant port on the block with hondabond its nothing big. go to honda get some hondabond for about 10-15 bucks
either kill it or drift it...

Why not just boost an F22A? The F22A head flows better than the H22A head. The F22B1 internals won't be able to handle THAT much boost... the H22 is only "bad" for boost because of the high compression. That CAN be boosted, but the margin for error is considerably less. Low compression is really only needed so amateurs don't blow their motors. People boost motors with 11.0+ compression.

I would think any frankenstein motor would be less reliable for turbo than parts that are made to work with each other. F22A would be my choice for turbo.

The F22B1 actually responds well to boost.

The port geometry is overcome somewhat by air that is pressurized.

Honestly, I think if it were me, I would just go ahead and boost the F22B1. There are a lot of guys over 300WHP stock block on those.

And yes, the M2B4 will bolt up fine. The disadvantage would be being at 4K at 80MPH on the highway.

That might be a reason to consider an F22 tranny with an LSD added.

A boosted F22 has enough torque to overcome the gearing disadvantage.

The longer gearing of the F22 is actually an advantage when boosted. The shorter gears of the M2B4 will make for an extra shift in the quarter mile. When you shift, the turbo has to spool again in the next gear. The longer gearing means that's one less shift, and more time spent boosting!

Boost can overcome a lot of poor design issues. However, the free-flowing F22A head would still be beneficial. Regardless, boost is boost. You can make decent power on just about any Honda engine. 300whp and under can be seen on pretty much any stock 1.8L+ block with careful tuning (maybe the smaller ones as well, but I've seen it commonly on 1.8 and up) More than 300whp and the car will have traction issues... if this is a daily driver and not a project, you don't want to go much higher than that anyway.

u must block oil returns on the h22 head and from experiance u need more oil pressure at higher rpms the f22 seems to starve the bottom end of oil......end result spun bearings thats the ONLY problem i had from the frank motors(h22/f22a)i plan on using a different oil pump on the new frank thats in the making(h22/h23a1)...........jus my 2 cents

                    thanks for the responses fellas.

i think for now, im gonna save up for a full H22 w/ M2B4... and in the future, possibly lower the compression and boost.

                    Cheers!
