how hard is it to change piston rings on a h22?? i got a deal on a longblock with low compression. and it need rings, it would just be easier to switch the rings than do a whole head swap to my f22a block right?? anyone with answers will be helpful

I don't know the details exactly, but I know it's not hard with the proper tools... Especially if the motor isn't in the car! I've seen plenty of pictures of pistons/rings being put into blocks. Get the tools, talk to a mechanic, get a book or two, and you'll have no trouble I'm sure!

How do the cylinders look? If they're glazed you'll have to hone them some... and if they're gouged or scarred you'll have to bore them... not really a do it yourself, first timer sort of thing... and the damn FRM makes the job a bit of a hassle...

Maybe have a machine shop take care of the cylinders for you and fit the rings yourself...but only if you have a good manual and the right tools( the manual will tell you what you need)...

probably a couple/few hundred minimum between parts and labor...

Although the HMT guy just slapped some new rings in his B16 without honing and it had good compression... he made shitty numbers on the dyno but that was a beat motor...

I saw a cylinder honing tool at my local auto parts store (before they closed). It was like 15 bux. It was just 3 stones on an expandable tool... made to be put into the cylinder, expand, and smooth out the walls. I'm sure it has to be done carefully, but it looked like an easy enough thing to use!

Still, any work you have to do, talk to a mechanic and/or a machinist and ask their opinion. Either have them do it, or have them tell you what you need to do.
