    H22 problems

FuncOvrForm H was acting up today. it was all doin good untill he came to a stop light and all of sudden the car died, took him a few trys to get it started and once did, pulled over to the side. when he started the car again, it sounded like one or more valves were hitting or pretty much a knock. his engine would die couple seconds after that. checked oil it was fine. after a few starts the knocking went away. finally drove off and seen that it was smoking a lot (white smoke), then it decreased as we drove. we manage to get it to my house and check out it more from there...... his cat. converter was hella smoking underneath the car. we also notice his engine was not at a good idle. we try to change the idle but nothing. we pretty much think his timing is off. distributor wasnt loose nor old. we dont have a timing gun so we cant tell where his timing is. we're just assuming its his timing but also thinking other options on what it could be. when he drives u could tell its not driving smooth through his exhaust by the way it sounds. can anyone help him on what it possibly could be and check?!

Pull the valve cover off and the upper timing cover and check the position of the cam gears and the tension of the timing belt. If the auto tensioner goes out or starts to go out, your belt will jump tension and cause the belt to move and get chewed up on the other components.

Timing dont just jump randomly, If your timing belt jumped a few tooth randomly one day then your tensioner and components are faulty. Even a cheap timing belt will last with the proper tension.

I've converted a h22 to the manual tensioner and used the cheapest timing belt i found and I revved the engine to 8k before with no problems.
