    anyone have ignitor/ICM problems?

my car started stuttering the day before a big meet so i didnt want to take the cb7.

it only stutters under very warm temperature or after i beat on it and the motor is like heat soaked.

this is my third ignitor going out and being i dont have the camry anymore, i cant afford any down time
im about to opt for the distributor kings because they have lifetime warranty and has been around the block for quite some time.

i got a quote off their ebay auction:
A common problem with OEM distributors is the ignition module (ignitor) in the distributor overheating and failing due to high temperatures and driving condition in North America. Distributor King Ltd. solved this problem by redesigning the module so that it can withstand higher temperatures (± 100°F more than an OEM module).

0.5mm Oversized Stainless valves and bronze guides available. Pm me please.

yeah I just bought a new ignitor from Honda for my 93 external coil ignition. Its working well so far. The first one died at 155K.

Did you place any thermal grease between the metal contact pads on the igniter unit? It helps transfer heat to the body of the dizzy. Your ICM won't last too long without it.

nope, all used ones but i only have 20k miles on the vehicle. no thermal grease either. i bought an oem distributor from the dealer a couple years ago. costed about 300+ bucks without the ignitor becaus ei couldnt find it on their site. thats after i paid 125 for a "new" one off ebay and it ran well other than the CPS CEL that came up. they fucked me ont he warranty, just gave me the whole run around.

luckily it cooled down here and my car still runs decent but my mileage is probably hurting from the missing.

im just gonna opt for the distributor king one and fabricate a cooling duct for the dizzy housing. ill make millions.

I did two ignitors in quick succession. Turns out that they are sensitive to high lead resistance.

High resistance in the ignition leads means less electrical energy passes easily to the spark plugs (giving weaker spark), but since that 'lost' electrical energy has to go somewhere it 'backs up', heating up the leads (further increasing their resistance) and overheating the ignitor (coil as well probably?).

Check lead resistance, and if it's out of spec replace them...

Replaced my ignitor at about 160K, haven't had a problem since.

cpmike has a unit that replaces the OEM ignitor that he sells, may be the solution to your problem. Of course you do need a MSD box to work with it, but, I think its better than buying another new distributor.

well, swapped the entire distributor with my project car which runs with no problems and it stuttered again on the way home.

too high of a spark plug gap means it would require more energy to release the spark. so when it doesnt fire, could it result in my missing problem?
it also only does it when the vehicle is warmed up.

im going to pull the plugs and check condition and gap. (NGK V-power)
spark plug wires on old distributor were all around 8-10k ohms.

update, pulled the plugs and they were all brown in color and rich.

changed them to a set of used autolites and filled the tank and it still stutters. i re-timed the motor and it was way off because i didnt bypass the computer. anyways, fixed that...re-did my idle speed so my timing was in sync. my TPS voltage is perfect.

still stutters and it did it once when i was cruising in third at 2k rpms. it always does it at around 2k rpms.
