Abnormal pressure in fuel tank

Ok so recently I have noticed a fuel odor in my cb7 so I inspected the fuel system and can find no leaks. The smell will go away when I purge the fuel tank by removing the cap but will come back. I purchased a new gas cap but the problem is still there. Now today I had a strong smell again so I went to open the gas cap to relieve the pressure in the tank and the car stalled. It took a minute to restart but seems fine now. I am leaning towards the charcoal canister being bad but at the price of a new one I thought I would ask and see if anyone has had a similar problem.

I'd guess the charcoal canister also. I'm not positive about CB7s but you should be able to bypass the charcoal canister with some vacuum hose and see if that solves the problem.
