    Reverse Sound

guys, this maybe a funny question to ask.But I was always wondering about this.Every time we put the gear into reverse and go backwards, there is a sound from the tranny or engine I am not so sure. But people told me that's only for honda.Only honda makes this sound? I didn't hear it on toyotas at least.Any idea why our hondas make this sound?

Angels East,Angels West,North and South, just do your best,to guard her and watch her while she rests.

Almost all manual trannies do that. Honda is the only or one of the few many that with an autotragic it makes that sound too.

It's just gear noise. Happens because of the shape and styl eof the gears used, that's all.

I like it too, sounds like an old Jeep.

I also like it when it happens in the lower half of third gear, sounds like a racer.

Yup it's gear noise. the reverse gear is a straight cut gear and it's cheaper and more cost efficient to produce. It is NOT exclusive to hondas. Almost all car manufactures use straight cut gears for reverse. How-ever the high end car makers use helical cut gears for reverse and they make no noise at all. The noise comes from the straight cuts of the reverse gear coming in contact with straight cuts of the output shaft.

haha thats a good way to put it.. yeah thats what they mean the noise kinda scares me when i go in reverse really fast.

Is there any con's of driving fast in reverse? like will anything brake?

Reverse doesn't have synchros and it's a shorter gear than first

                      Autotragic hondas do the same

Must be the reason I hear it all the time then.

Just a thought, but does anyone else see a correlation between this sound and a transversely mounted (mr or ff) engine?

Ummm...to the best of my knowledge, every manual transmission does it. Even fr, f4 and r4 cars do it, just some are a little more refined than others.
